What's currently good on 4OD?

Just started it. Excellent. In the vein of I May Destroy You. Loving these young black female writers.
I don't think it bears any similarity to 'I will destroy you" aside from the fact that both writers are young black women and both leads are writers.

I think there are issues around sexuality, and this in relation to race too, that both have. Also the experience of being young and second generation Caribbean/African in London.
The last episode of Queenie definitely raised issues around consent.

Black women in London of similar ages and similar careers, so similar spring board of having to navigate patriarchy and racism- a given for women regarding patriachy. A given for black women regarding patriachy and racism. That's where the similarity ends imo.

I found IWDY harrowing and really dark. Queenie not so much mostly because the way it was told and presented was completely different to IWDY. (Despite it having quite heavy themes) I thought it was presented fairly humorously.

IWDY absolutely BLEW my mind. The rage was tangible and I felt deeply reflected on television probably for the first time ever.

Queenie no where near in the same league. I don't think it had any where near the same kind of depth.
I still really enjoyed it though.

Agree, I think you misunderstand me. Imdy was incredible, so powerful. In a league of its own.
But I still think there is crossover in theme and identity.
Patriarchy and racism a given for young black women but how often do you see that on mainstream television.
And as I said there was definitely something about consent in the last episode I watched of Queenie, presented more humouresly but dark, cause it wasn't funny at all.
Queenie is also full of references to direct racism, exoticism, domestic violence, etc. presented in a light format but not light.

I've not misunderstood you.
Clearly I have received it very differently to you. Not surprising being different people. Agree to disagree past the obvious broad similarity.

I just meant we agree that imdy is TV in another league to most things and Queenie is not on the same level, despite being very good.
We probably both also agree that there is not enough young black women writing for mainstream TV, even if that feels like a given.

Half of this is really good (the academic contributions). Half of it is fucking dire, full of fucking nonsense that made me want to kick the telly in.

Yes. We watched the first episode. Enjoyed her howling off-camera for Bats For Lashes, but felt we hadn’t learned anything except that, wonderful as Suranne is, she probably shouldn’t present stuff. And Mrs LR correctly predicted from the start that Ronald Hutton would appear. (Although she called him “the witch professor who looks like Cromwell”).

It was also veering dangerously close to Cunk territory on too many occasions.

saw that Drive My Car was on 4OD. great, I missed that at the cinema.

it comes up in the search on Apple TV app, but there's no play button or even a message saying it's unavailable like there usually is if the rights have expired.
tried on the laptop it shows up fine but after hitting play it's just stuck on spinning wheel.
tried on the phone app thinking I could airplay / screen mirror it from there to the TV but the app does say "No episodes [sic] available to watch on demand".

I give up. I do sometimes think about signing up for the £3/month no-ads option but then shit like this happens. no point paying for a service that doesn't work. god only knows if the film is supposed to be available or not.

Must be your interface as it works for me. It's on my watchlist. Gone in 21 days though!

Trump's Heist: President Who Wouldn't Lose is worth a watch. The BBC doc on the Capitol riots is still my high point for Trumpism coverage, but this is a good accompaniament, featuring interviews with lots of Republicans, most of whom have, erm, revised their opinion of the man, post-2021.

Mind you, you still get bellends like the Shamen on there.

Getting annoyed with those Domino’s ads.
Might just be on Taskmaster.
But I must he missing some reference they’re making: why is someone who appears to be dressed like a Madchester acolyte in 1993 being threatened by what appear to be Latin American gangsters and what does this have to with the worst pizzas in the world?

Worse are those Ionos ones, with "Aunt Helga". They still crop up on some playbacks.
