Why doesnt modern literature deal with current affairs?

Delphi by Claire Pollard was an interesting riff on the pandemic period and I think there's a good few other novels about it.

Can’t be arsed to the the entire thread to check if the points have been made already, but for me, it’s largely about being too fresh in the memory. It can work well with non-fiction books (or films for that matter), and even dramatised/ semi fictional works), but I guess there is less hunger for fiction works.

From my own perspective I would add that because most relevant events of our recent times are so fucking depressing, there is less appetite for them- again, purely from the fiction end of the spectrum.

I read that. Can’t remember owt about it, just that I bought it cos the street in the title was just around the corner when I lived in Deptford. Full of art wanker spaces.

If you're not an established author, you'll likely be touting a novel around for years before you get it published. This doesn't lend itself to your book having much to do with the zeitgeist by the time anyone reads it.

Because things are so polarised you risk losing half your audience immediately therefore not commercially viable
