US election 2020 thread

Huge difference between Cubans, Mexicans, Venezuelans etc etc. Non-English speakers, English speakers and primarily English speakers. It's quite a broad group and there's always been more of them supporting Republicans than is the case in, say, black voters
Yep. And they're not becoming more Republican as an aggregate group. Reagan and Bush Jnr both made relatively successful pitches for Latino support. Other Republicans less so. Has Trump even tried? He's reversed the Obama measures wrt Cuba, which will of course please a certain kind of Cuban-American, but that's all I can think of, and they vote Republican anyway.

Sounds like the Latinos are in the process of becoming white to steal a phrase/concept from Noel Ignatiev.

I was reading this last night. Italians and Irish weren't considered 'white' once upon a time.

"What’s more, the practical definitions of who’s white and who’s a minority are fluid. During the past hundred years, many Americans who weren’t originally considered white, including the descendants of immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe, were assimilated into whiteness. In the future, others who aren’t now considered white may do so, too. Latinos have a high intermarriage rate—close to fifty per cent for the college educated—and twenty per cent of U.S.-born Latinos have a non-Hispanic white parent. Latinos are also increasingly likely to live in integrated neighborhoods. Reversalists dream of many Latino voters going Republican because they have become uncomfortable with the prevailing political stance (more liberal on social issues, less liberal on economic issues) among college-educated white Democratic voters. "

Trump is going to barricade himself in the white house

A poll released last month from YouGov found that most voters expect to see a rise in violence following the election, including more than half of Democrats and Republicans.

A study released in mid-October also warned that five states -- Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Oregon -- were at risk to experience increased militia activity ahead of the election and afterward.

That report, which was released by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) and MilitiaWatch, also determined that North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, California and New Mexico were at moderate risk to see increased active militias during the same time period.

Against that, there's the Wall, the border stuff, ICe and the countless insults Trump has directed against latinos

there's lots of physical intimidation going on, i see seom posts on this above.

here's electoral intimidation:

Cumberland County officials received an email this week from the Trump campaign requesting highly specific details about the county’s ballot security.
The email, obtained by The Sentinel, went so far as to ask for the address and room numbers of ballot storage locations, and requested that the information be sent to the Gmail account of a Florida-based Trump operative.
County officials said they have not responded to the request and do not intend to, according to the county commissioners.

from beeb:

Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar told reporters that more than 2.4m postal ballots have been filled out and submitted.

Of the returned ballots, 1,596,195 are from registered Democrats while 555,805 are from registered Republicans.

Addressing reports that President Trump could claim victory before the election is called, Boockvar said:"We are hitting this on every front to make sure every Pennsylvanians can exercise their right to vote".

"There is literally no basis in law for anybody to certify the results until November 23."

Here's trump saying his lawyers will be 'going in' on the night of the election [to try to stop any further counting of votes]. Who are these lawyers are they real ?

"If you haven't made up your mind by now you're an idiot" - way to court those undecideds, Donnie

the GOPpers were happy because they thought the judge they got would be one of them

Hanen was appointed by President George W. Bush, a Republican

but ...

on the other side ...

Groups including the American Civil Liberties Union are asking to intervene in the litigation, saying the plaintiffs want to undermine the election and suppress votes.

ACLU lawyer Andre Segura said during the hearing that Hanen should avoid issuing an order requiring people to vote a second time.

“Once the egg has been scrambled it doesn’t make sense to put it back in the egg,”

so the lesson is, don't put the egg back in the egg.
