US election 2020 thread

Of all the things I've learned about the USA over the past few years, the most amazing is how even people in good jobs are content with only two weeks' holiday in order to enjoy the great outdoors ..
Yes, I once worked in a firm where EU workers all had 25 days but the American employees had just 15.
Let's hope with UK moving away from EU that there isn't downwards pressure on holidays here!
That is something that has happened since Reagan liberalisation. I worked for a UK General Motors subsidiary making steering wheel columns in 1973. Iirc we got 3 weeks holiday a year, but our US counterparts got more, and got a one year paid sabbatical after 20 years.

I would have thought fraud should be relatively easy to detect.

For in person voting, individuals are ticked off against their addresses/entries on being given a voting slip. So that polling station knows how many votes there should be in their ballot box. (I think that is how we do it in the UK)

Postal votes I think are equally strict including a signature check, it should also be impossible for someone to vote twice with a postal vote. And a postal vote which didn't match up to a voter's details would be discarded.

So both types of vote are linked to a personal reference.

Anyone hoping to introduce new ballot papers would surely fall foul of these checks.

I don't see Trump is approaching fertile ground for an appeal myself.

An article (non-paywalled for a change on this thread) with a bit more background on the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement, which seems to have its origins with Roger Stone, and some involvement of Bannon and his ilk.

Unnamed sources, but this is pretty much my lead suspicion of what Trump'll do after. Whether he eventually uses it to launch a 2024 campaign I can't be sure, but I'd genuinely be a bit surprised. He never wanted the job, and he could play it off as "I've already done that, they stole it from me, why would I want to go back there?".

President Trump has told friends he wants to start a digital media company to clobber Fox News and undermine the conservative-friendly network, sources tell Axios.

"He plans to wreck Fox. No doubt about it," said a source with detailed knowledge of Trump's intentions.

Here's Trump's plan, according to the source:
  • There's been lots of speculation about Trump starting a cable channel. But getting carried on cable systems would be expensive and time-consuming.
  • Instead, Trump is considering a digital media channel that would stream online, which would be cheaper and quicker to start.
  • Trump's digital offering would likely charge a monthly fee to MAGA fans. Many are Fox News viewers, and he'd aim to replace the network — and the $5.99-a-month Fox Nation streaming service, which has an 85% conversion rate from free trials to paid subscribers — as their top destination.

So the autocratic leader is refusing to concede the election to his rival, purging the military, and attacking the media while thousands of his supporters, including militia members, have gathered in the capital. Is it time to send in the UN peacekeepers yet?
If any developing nation on the planet acted like this, America would be chomping at the bit to enforce sanctions or military action by now.

"After waving to his supporters from the presidential limousine, El Trumpo returned to his official residence, where he issued a statement denouncing a company that makes voting machines as part of a radical leftist conspiracy against him."

true, unless the old government backed the US in which case the new government-in-waiting would be a load of commies who deserved naaathing

Not yet. Everything I’ve seen and heard from commentators I trust suggest these are toothless threats. Hence why Biden is laughing.
Trust the process.

Pathetic!!!

State GOP lawmakers in Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have all said they would not intervene in the selection of electors, who ultimately cast the votes that secure a candidate's victory. Such a move would violate state law and a vote of the people, several noted.

“I do not see, short of finding some type of fraud — which I haven’t heard of anything — I don’t see us in any serious way addressing a change in electors,” said Rusty Bowers, Arizona’s Republican House speaker, who says he’s been inundated with emails pleading for the legislature to intervene. “They are mandated by statute to choose according to the vote of the people.”

"Don't hold back" (with added exclamation marks)

There was a time when a comment like this from someone high-profile would have made the news, attracted widespread criticism and ultimately cost them their job.

Now it doesn't even get mentioned.

The Trump legacy :(
