US election 2020 thread

Oh coup or no coup, it's not going to be fine! But we should calm down anyway.

Not having a go, but maybe you should knock the twitter on the head? I've already been blocked by one ex-friend on there (i.e. I was friends with him in real life, before Facebook put an end to that).

Its astonishing how on Facebook you can learn things about people you never wanted to know and end up wishing you didn't. Over the last year I've lost two friends because of political views--one because they thought I was too liberal, and one because they thought I was too conservative. Can't win for losing.

Not strictly political, but a few people I've known for years put up stuff on Facebook about their teenage kids which was quite personal (I'm not going to repeat it) and which I thought was a bit off, given its personal nature. I mean, why would you do that?

That actually helps, he just really likes firing people, it’s fun for him, maybe he will just fire as many people as he can for as long as he can and it’s not for any deeper reason than that.

He's lashing out in anger and frustration, He really is the spoilt child who has never failed to get what he wants by throwing a tantrum before. He just can't grasp why his 'people' can't fix things for him again. Some of the GOP are finding it necessary to at least pay lip service to his rants for now because they realise that a lot of their supporters are Trump's creatures first and theirs second but they don't actually care about him, they're being pragmatic (some are just being cowardly and a few crazies might even truly support him) No-one wants to upset the entire system for one man who demands total loyalty but gives none in return.

The point is what does Trump think it will achieve. Maybe he is just avenging himself on those who Wronged Him (as he sees it) and who he can actually fuck up. The head of oversight of electricity and natural gas - does he actually have a big switch in his office? Maybe Trump thinks he does.
I think Trump has just gone "I'm not leaving whatever happens. Do whatever you need to do, I'll be playing golf. I might do some tweets later."

I do expect the old certainties to continue to erode as we move through this century, and there is always a chance I wont see an acute moment of change coming.
When it comes to mainstream media narratives its "acute" now, never mind not seeing it coming

I think Oklahoma and Vermont have certified as well

An interesting, if bizarre, take for the hundreds of thousands of foreigners who fought on both sides.
Sorry I wasn't aware that loads of people on this thread were heading over to the USA to fight; I just thought people were getting maybe harmfully wound up about something that at the moment isn't an issue at all.

Comparing this right now at this moment in time to the spanish civil war is totally nuts. And really doesn't help de-escalating anyone who is panicking a bit.

I found asking JTG to alert me when I should panic helped, I can recommend it. :)

Perhaps he could give a general site-wide 'Panic' alert with this being the 'all clear' (I used to have the original badge - like this only green - but my girlfriend of the time borrowed it and after promising faithfully to take care of it, lost it :( ).

Ok, I would say we're on level "Careful now/Down with this sort of thing". So, if you can work from home, gather in groups of no more than six.

Yeah. Noting your reply about Alaska earlier quite a bit seems to go over your head doesn't it. Never mind.

It's turning from In The Thick of It to an episode of SOAP!

Your point was that me saying "don't worry what's going on at the moment because you don't live there" was incorrect because that would have meant no foreign help would have opposed the fascist army in the spanish civil war, I think? Correct me if I am wrong.

My point was that, in the specific context of this thread, my advice was trying to depanick people who might have got overly worked up and anxious. It was personal, rather than political, advice. And you bringing the spanish civil war into it, an actual war with real armies shooting at each other in trenches, was possibly having the opposite effect (and irrelevant to what is going on right now).

edit: also you are a prick. (i don't do passive aggressive any more)

My 'point' was a joke. Like the joke you didn't get about Alaska.

There's no 'I just want to see the result' option on his poll, so I guarantee some people just clicked on the third option for the giggles.
Plenty probably. But half of americans do not expect there to be a peaceful transition of power and everyone here seems to want to dismiss that flipantly too ( I do get that half of americans are very probably wrong).

People are on edge because none of this has ever happened before, at least not in their lifetime. They're used to the political system being pretty stable and they aren't quite sure what to do in this situation, or even worse, what they should do if it is a coup. Uncertainly is a bad thing for social stability.
