US election 2020 thread

Thinking of starting a depressing poll of what atrocity one/several of Trump's supporters will do in the next two months in 'revenge' for 'stealing the election'. Eg:
  • Attempt/carry out assassination of Pres or VP Elect
  • Kill some poor bugger who was counting votes (my money's on this)
  • Killing BLM activist/s

etc

Surely there will be some serious bovver starting from tonight?

I said on another thread that part of me is worried about what happens if he loses. This is the kind of thing I was thinking about , I hope it all calms down.

I just think it must've been really fucking traumatic living under Trump.
Under no illusions about Biden but I can only imagine the weight lifted today, all the same.

I hope his win is not so easily forgotten, to him, that he forgets what came before, too (clutching at straws slightly there, I know).

One of my relatives is a very senior exec in the Four Seasons Hotel group. He says that the Repugs had booked the PA Four Seasons but then cancelled and went with the landscaping industrial estate Four Seasons instead. Its utterly bizarre.

A secure fenced in car-park away from the general public, why risk the proles getting in the way?

Bizarre reporting from Sky in Philly, describing the mood as tense because Trump and Biden supporters are on opposite sides of the road. Trump fans quiet, Biden fans dancing

I mean, sorry for sober reflection and all that, but the next 4 years is a big danger period for the USA.

The GOP will be building up the narrative that this election was 'stolen', they have the proof that racism, misgyny and hatred play plenty well with a lot of the population, including women and minorities.

The economy will tank due to COVID and no one can prevent that, and it will still be in a bad way come next election, and the GOP will go big on the narrative that they could have saved the nation from this, that all the bad stuff is the Dem's fault.

Hitler made plenty of hay from Germany's loss of WWI which came as a total shock to most Germans who had been told until the bitter end that Germany was going to win.... and they needed someone to blame.

i'll wait for the GOP reaction

sorta believe they will want to distance themselves from trumps policies

seems to be a lot of suggestion from the right that Biden works with them

sure it was a part of biden election strategy and why he might of flipped a few states

I hope that Biden & Harris can hit the ground running ...

There are a lot of things requiring their urgent attention, so they'll need a very good team prepared to work very hard !

Don't really agree with the first bit. I don't think the GOP can or will run with the stolen election narrative. Aside from the absurdity of the party of voter suppression who actually did steal an election 20 years ago making that claim, there is no evidence of fraud. That's all going to go away very quickly, I think.

And they've just lost an election with racism, misogyny and hatred - very nearly lost the last one for it too. It clearly didn't play well with enough of the population.

Regarding the economy tanking, exactly the same thing was said when Obama took charge after the credit crunch. You may be right, but those fears back then (and I had them) weren't really borne out.

I have a suspicion that Biden will go for a big thing of working with everyone, including Republicans and left Democrats, and only a few Trumpites here and there being excluded. Probably not a daft PR strategy if you think you can make it work. Biden, the great uniter. I don't pretend to know enough about American politics to say how it would go.

Why has this sky bloke got a pic of theresa may as his profile?

Lots of noises saying exactly that. tbf unless the Dems win both runoffs in Georgia, he'll have the senate against him, so he won't really have a choice.

Yes, a lot of people can definitely breathe easier.

People forget that basically if you are female, gay, a person of colour - your human rights can still be taken away. About the only 'rights' straight, white men have had taken away from them (and not everywhere at that) is being able to abuse their wives and to own other humans - which are rights they should never had had in the first place.

I actually think Trump doesn't personally have any strong feelings towards removing rights, but if doing so made people cheer him on, he was up for it. So think about how it must feel being one of those groups having a man like that in charge of your country.

Certainly agree to an extent, but it's a crucial and timely spanner in their works. I think the craziness and damage done to the country that would have followed would have accelerated and been irreparable.
Also, the President of the world's largest economy wouldn't even aknowledge the cause of climate change, much less deal with it. I agree that it's possibly a reprieve rather than game over, but it's an important one nevertheless. Now, for all their bluster, and occasional violence; the racists, conspiracists etc don't have the President on their side.
