US election 2020 thread

Long live the old corporate neo-liberal centrism that left many people behind and produced Trump in the first place!!

In all seriousness, the US outcome is probably the best that could be hoped for. Trump is out, and Biden's administration looks like it could be weak and vulnerable.
I don't think a weak Biden administration, particularly if it's weak because the Senate is against him, is a good thing for Americans. Four more years of dither on healthcare, struggles to regain the lost ground on the environment and climate change, endless blocks on budgets when Republicans are allowed to borrow with impunity. If it were stronger, it could perhaps be held to account for failing to do these things. If it's weak, it can just say, yet again, 'well, we tried'.

Internationally, I don't think it makes so much difference if a president is weak or strong at home, aside perhaps from the chance that a president who is weak at home might be more tempted to start a diverting war or two.

If I'm right, Pence as VP would only take over if the trumplstilskin is incapacitated. eg unconscious for for medical procedures (or having a bullet removed).

But perhaps put-one-in might be persuaded to loan the secretserv1ce some novochok, if langley don't have any kicking around their vaults ...

Good news. Loads of people seem a bit too naive/hopeful though as to what this means for the future of the US.
Its not hope, it's relief.... it's the end of a period of a subtle form of psychological torture. There have been Presidents who have done more damage, that's for sure, but Trump has driven people out of their minds. Must've been hellish for the those living in the States. One US poster on Facebook I know compared it to when she left her abusive partner ... That's a big comparison to make, but it wasn't hyperbole from her.

No, I agree, Trump is an arsehole that had to go. Racial tensions aren't going to disappear overnight though, and Biden could just be a return to the neo-liberal policies we've seen in the past (a lot of dirty work going on under the hood which people either don't know about or can ignore).

guardian has this long lens photo. i really dont think they've told him, whoever they are with the hats on.

No, you're right, he found out from television:

Here is Trump’s statement in full:

“We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed. The simple fact is this election is far from over. Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor. In Pennsylvania, for example, our legal observers were not permitted meaningful access to watch the counting process. Legal votes decide who is president, not the news media.

“Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated. The American People are entitled to an honest election: that means counting all legal ballots, and not counting any illegal ballots. This is the only way to ensure the public has full confidence in our election. It remains shocking that the Biden campaign refuses to agree with this basic principle and wants ballots counted even if they are fraudulent, manufactured, or cast by ineligible or deceased voters. Only a party engaged in wrongdoing would unlawfully keep observers out of the count room – and then fight in court to block their access.

“So what is Biden hiding? I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands.”

i agree, but the image of the rejection of trumpism and having a multiculti vice president is very strong. for w/c americans, biden's election will result in small but not-insignificant improvements (i predict).

what should be kept in mind is that trumpsim lived on a terrain of image and goonery, not substance. the racialist violence didn't start during the past four years, and won't end now, but trump legitimated it, and that legitimation has been rejected with this election. today we're seeing rightwingers melting down who liked to accuse "liberals" of being "snowflakes" who melt down. that's an invaluable corrective.

Common i know biden is not bernie but surely you can manage a little smile :p

Must admit, 'this moment' has been much more impactful than I was expecting, after Election night. I thought it would be a fairly trivial 'bump' in understanding that some formula or network opinion that the lead is, by a seemingly arbitrary measure, unassailable. The legal challenge was always the next step.

But the outpouring of universal celebrations seemed to have cemented it. The momentum shift feels terminal for his legal or whimpering arguments. Maybe it was worth waiting for a Saturday afternoon

and none in the last 4 years?

the dems voted in a centralist

so its not jesus but let them have their moment

I didn't say that, but many friends seem totally unaware of some of the shit that went on under Obama. Let's have a bit of realism. ;)
