US election 2020 thread

MM was.seen wandering around maskless during a party event on Election Day, alongside the rest of the Trump crime family. Pretty much no masks in sight. They don’t care.

This is quite something. It looks to me like she, one of the presidents favourite fox news presenters, is talking directly to him, she knows he is watching and she's telling him he doesn't need to smash the whole place up everybody is still very proud of him, he can come out now and still get a cookie.

They're just gonna along with this crap not calling any states over the whole fucking weekend for TV ratings aren't they. Seems pretty cynical at this point

Should have counted only the legal teams, don't see any sign of Man United observers etc.

when they remake his favourite film, Citizen Kane, the enigmatic character's last words will be "Greavsie!", which will leave everyone nonplussed. In the last scene we'll see a mug chucked into a skip outside the gutted shell of the Mar a Lago club-house.

I suspect the motive of Fox calling for him to accept defeat is that they know it’s inevitable and they don’t want some kind of clusterfuck that tarnishes the Republican brand and damages the party. Got to protect the queen and all that.

If it gets to the point where the GOP en masse have to start briefing against him, Trump’s response to them might lead loyal trumpists away from the party. Not something they’ll want with the crucial GA senate runoffs on the horizon. Better that he squabbles with Fox over this, plus they know he pays attention to them.

After Fox called Arizona for Biden, Trump's campaign sent out a press release personally attacking the network's decision desk director - I think part of the reason networks seem cautious about calling the race is because nobody wants to be so far ahead of the others that they'll have armed QAnon crazies targeting their facilities or employees' homes.

Yep; damage limitation mode.

The billionaire press have no interest in seeing the GOP ‘base’ split.

Fox doesn't care about the Republican brand, it cares about the interests of Rupert Murdoch, who owns Fox. In Britain, the Sun and the Times were quite happy to abandon the Tories and support Blair once they knew he was Murdoch friendly. It will be the same in the USA if Murdoch thinks he can trust Biden.

Except, of course, that bit of the Billionaire press that supports the Democrats. The Democrat supporting and virulently anti-Trump Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos who has loads more billions than Murdoch. Those with money and the power that it brings will support those politicians and political parties willing to work for their interests. The colour of the rosette worn by those politicians is of little interest to them.

For anyone that missed it, here's Biden's speech from last night, one again calling for calm, and for the nation to come together.

Ta for that. It's all theatre, but it's the theatre America needs right now I think. Huge numbers of Trump voters will have done so because they've fallen for the law and order/anteeeefa/pinko commie rhetoric and are just afraid. Here's hoping over the next couple of months they can keep this kind of messaging up and calm down all but the most rabid.

After January though, fuck me, got their work cut out. There's probably a thread to be done by someone much cleverer than me about how polarised everything seems to be these days. Is it worse than it used to be? Or is it "just" that you can hear all the frothing madmen on both sides of an argument more than you ever did?

Sorry, idle musing.

Quite interesting, this argues that the people who form(ed) trump's base are defined by their already deep distrust in the whole system, and they are not going anywhere those people, and the republican party will still need them, in the future, so its not going to be that simple for the GOP to just turn on trump and declare that the fraud allegations are baseless and wash their hands of the whole embarrassing thing.

'But even if Trump’s Hail Mary pass quickly fizzles, even if his attempt to stay in the White House is drowned out by the reality of the vote count and a tsunami of “Biden won” headlines, that doesn’t mean Trump will admit that the election was fair—ever. Even if Trump is forced to make a grudging concession speech, even if Biden is sworn in as president on January 20, even if the Trump family is forced to pack its Louis Vuitton suitcases and flee to Mar-a-Lago, it is in Trump’s interest, and a part of the Republican Party’s interest, to maintain the fiction that the election was stolen. That’s because the same base, the base that distrusts American democracy, could still be extremely useful to Trump, as well as to the Republican Party, in years to come..'

The panel on CNN yesterday afternoon in the UK, were discussing the possibility of someone in Trump’s circle should have a conversation with him, to placate him and say, you’ve done a great job increasing the Republican Party share of the vote and prepare him for leaving quietly, so as to do as least damage to the Republicans initially, but also stop damaging the country anymore.
Obviously someone at Fox responded.

Can't see trump responding to any of the pleas for sanity. And he will try to use the transition period for maximum shit flinging and wrecking tactics. But without any media support and most of his allies and sycophants making themselves scarce, it will be just one long embarrassment. Downfall reimagined as a toddlers birthday party where someone has had too much cake and stayed up way past their bedtime.

I wonder if part of the reason he cannot accept losing is due to his, apparent, belief that losers are beneath contempt, and he cannot be a loser because this would challenge his concept of himself.

The Guardian's headline, and presumably part of Biden's speech last night is 'Democracy Works'. Lol. On the basis that when the system could offer no choice better than that between a madman and a warmed-up corpse they managed to elect the cadaver. Just.

And no the Republicans won't reject conspiracy and racism driven populism. If their base will vote for Trump it'll vote for just about anyone in blue, whereas any move towards centrism risks losing the dribbling loons and racists.

What a fucking travesty all round.

Yep - having your entire country hold a vote on you and reject you in favour of a despised rival who will now take your job and replace you in your home of several years would be kind of a headfuck for anybody.

For an extreme narcissist like Trump, I don't think there's any way he'll ever accept the reality that Joe Biden has turned him into a loser whose loserdom will be front-page news all over the world and will be read about in history books for centuries.
