US Democratic Party Primaries 2019

It’s a remnant of the Cold War the whole ‘socialism is bad’ shite. I think there was a poll recently and for the first time a majority of people between ages of 18-45 had a positive view of the term socialism and a minority with the term capitalism. So I think this election will also be as much about old vs young as any other demographic you want to pluck out of the air.
I’m watching the CNN coverage of the Super Tuesday primaries. It’s awful, both in terms of the execrable number of adverts and the centrist punditry that obsessively insists that Trump can only be beaten from the centre despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

In fact the CNN exit polls are revealing. 42% of voters want ‘compete change’ of the way the economy is managed. A majority support Sanders position on healthcare. As the pundits sit there praying for a Biden bounce the electorate continues to move away from the political tradition and ideas he represents

Might be a bit early to declare Biden the winner - he racked up a lot of wins in states that are going to vote Republican in November, but the Democratic states were split more evenly between Sanders and Biden and Sanders has taken California - looks like it's going to be close in Texas as well.

That's true but it's not relevant to the delegate count. I agree with kabbes Biden is now in pole position.

There's 415 delegates at stake in California - so far Sanders has 33, Bloomberg has 2, and Biden has 1 - I think Sanders is likely to end up still ahead in the delegate count and the map doesn't look great for Biden after that.

No doubt that Sanders will come out ahead in California but Texas is going to be close and Biden's now the only centrist candidate, so doesn't have to deal with a split vote. It's definitely been a better night for Biden than Sanders

Best-case scenario for Sanders now is probably if Warren drops out and endorses him while Bloomberg stays in and takes some votes from Biden.

Though since that would leave one 77-year-old man and two 78-year-old men in the race, Warren may want to wait and see what happens with the coronavirus outbreak over the next few weeks - how many hands do these candidates shake on a daily basis?

It was always going to be a good night for Biden. Especially once the other centrist candidates dropped out for him. To be fair, at one point his campaign looked dead so it’s been a very good night unfortunately. It’s been a disaster for Bloomberg who has just wasted €1/2 Billion of his own money.

The most disappointing element of the night was a) how close Sanders came in a number of places and b) if he could have increased turnout - his big appeal last time - he might have squeaked a few more.

As for Warren if she continues after these results you’d have to ask why and in whose interest

It's looking like 4 more years of trump. Fucking Democrat party, no lessons learned in 4 years since establishment centrist Hillary got beaten. Joe Biden is basically the Democrat version of trump too in terms of his social ineptitude and tendency to say ridiculous things, image over substance. I don't even know what grounds Biden can fight trump on. What has he got to offer? Why would anyone who voted for trump in 2016 switch and vote for Biden instead in 2020? It's a dark day.

It’s an exercise in delusion. As the polls, and their own base, polarises the Democrats cling on to a centre ground that is emptier by the day.

Biden will be an awful candidate. His stated appeal seems to be that he was VP in an administration that swept up the last mass expression of hope and faith in third way triangulating politics and extinguished them.

Like Labour and Starmer the lessons the Democrats have learnt about how to tackle right wing populism and figures who are ‘beyond politics’ have been entirely the wrong ones

Trump’s campaign messages are already written....

it would be helpful now if Biden has a proper meltdown. all the focus is on him and theres a long campaign trail to go, hopefully the pressure will be too much for him. hes fucked up before he can fuck it up again. heres hoping yesterday was peak biden

I think they're hoping he will bring in a lot of moderate Republican voters disaffected with the current administration, in the strategy that worked so well for President Kerry.

Isn't it the same strategy that HRM followed 'If we lose one blue collar in the city we'll pick up two moderate republicans in the suburbs" shtick? I think two things have been laid bare over the last 4 years, 1. 'Never Trump'ers all voted Trump and 2 moderate Republicans don't exist.

Sorry Yossarian replying to two of your posts makes look like I'm having a go, I'm not.

Absolutely .For the anyone but Saunders camp in the Democrats having Blomberg/Warren still in the race with Biden would be a disaster.Far better to have one anti Saunders candidiate.

Is the Obama connection the only reason Biden is doing so well with Black voters? Seems odd

That is the reason given by the American punditry. Fuck knows why:

An article on conservativeblog.org demanding 'liberals' celebrate Donald Trumps record in office is definitely the first place I'd look for details of Obama's failings.

Nope, the first thing you'd do is overlook what the data is telling you.

Not for the first time

Have a link from the house journal of American liberalism: Opinion | Democrats Gave Obama a Free Pass. That Could Hurt Us on Election Day.

Have you got anything to say about what it is telling you about Obama and the black working class??

I'm making no defence of Biden or Obama, it was a disastrous presidency. But you can criticise disastrous presidencies without reference to right wing propaganda pieces.
