US Democratic Party Primaries 2019

I'm a bit jealous. Our caucus didn't have beer.

It does show one of the strengths of the caucus format. The ability of people to network and meet each is really valuable. At ours, I met neighbors who lived a block away from me that I had never met.

There are drawbacks too. It can be difficult for everyone to get there. Anyone who works for a living or goes to school might have trouble getting to a caucus. Or, transportation itself might be an issue.

Mayor Pete is declaring victory,

ETA according to pro Pete Guardian.
Mayor Pete talks and talks and talks and says absolutely nothing ......even more than most politicians. The Dems made a fool of themselves....trying to count votes with some app that didn't work. It's looking like 4 more years for Mr. Orange.

Not a great night for the Democrats' image - but the very first day of primary season might be a little too soon to write them off. Unless it turns out that Joe Biden won by a landslide.

Wow. At the moment it appears that the Iowa Democratic party couldn't manage itself out of a paper bag.

Nonsense, they’ve said everything is absolutely fine. Not really any problems at all. Nope. Just being diligent now.

Graun is also reporting on Gallup poll giving Trump approval ratings at 49%. November is, fortunately, a long way off. But it’s not a great start is it?

Does anyone know why Pete is claiming victory? Does he know something we don’t? There’s something awfully fishy about all this.

His long term trajectory up to this point was questionable given his lack of support among black voters. But then Biden, who had been polling neck and neck with Bernie, absolutely tanked. I think Pete decided to pull a Bush 2000 move and declare victory in order to control the narrative and position himself as the new establishment choice.

Pete's made a lot of claims that don't stand up to scrutiny. I doubt if this will be any different tbf.

I think he was planning to claim victory after finishing anywhere in the top four and just went with the speech he already had prepared - he later argued that just being there was a victory. :D

For a campaign that a year ago, I think a lot of people were questioning what right we even had to do this and to make the attempt. And so it's clearly a victory for us even as we -- along with, I think, the whole country -- impatiently wait for some official results from the party.

Plus, a source in mayo Pete's campaign said this little gem earlier to Reuters:

the delay was "definitely going to de-legitimise whoever wins".

...so trying to play it both ways: declare victory and then when you get caught in the lie, claim the opposition victory is illegitimate. No wonder that guy draws so much ire from the Sanders lot...

As a software engineer I have trouble with all conspiracy theories relating to this, as it just seems like absolutely standard practice - shit custom app sold to idiots and written by clueless 20-somethings without any proper structure or management somehow mysteriously fucks up.

It looks like several former Hillary staffers work for the company, and Mayo Pete has spent money at that company. If true it's a massive conflict of interest at the very least.

Conspiracy is obviously a stretch... But, from the little decent info I can find, it's a pretty ludicrous conflict of interest.

Am I right in saying this is essentially collating around 1700 results by the way? Even with the slight complication of the alignment procedure it seems completely ridiculous that it's taking so long.

Given the Democrats ludicrous and doomed to failure from the start attempt to impeach Trump. Given their addiction to the idea that the way to beat him is from the centre - despite all evidence to the contrary. And given the use of ‘new technology’ they’d actually go up in my estimation if they were capable of a stitch up of Bernie.

I think there's a Sanders' sleeper cell within the upper echelons of the DNC. There's no other explanation for this monumental fuck up. :D

Probably very connected with why it has been adopted at all. But that's just everyday business corruption.

Nathan Robinson says the company that built the app is

Return in his pretty good guardian article Joe Biden flopped in Iowa. And so did the Democratic party's reputation | Nathan Robinson that goes into quite a bit of deal about the suppression of the Register’s poll.

The whole thing stinks and it will just stir the pot of conspiracy.

For all the Democrats' flaws, they can't be accused of failing to impeach Trump, - they successfully impeached him, but predictably failed to secure a conviction from the Republican-controlled Senate.

Precisely. They failed. They were always going to. They’ve cemented in Trump’s outsider image (better than he ever could himself). They’ve revealed themselves to be incompetent insiders.
