Urban75 Album of the Year - The Results

I only first heard it a week or so ago. It only got demoted from 1st as I think most or all of the tracks are cover versions.
I didn't listen to it earlier cos (spoiler alert) it didn't make the chart at all. I am correcting that now and you are certainly right that it is bloody good.

That's long enough, I know your finger is hovering waiting to buy the AotY for your (least) favourite nibling.....

1 Low - Hey What

Where Double Negative dived straight into unexplored territory, Hey What knows where it is now and continues to explore the region having got to know the locals a bit and discovered they are just like us after all.

Top prize goes to killer b for guessing the correct Top 3 - again.

As I said, this years choices were eclectic as fuck, with the winner having by far the lowest vote ever, but also being on by far the most commonly chosen album. It was reasonably well clear of Little Simz, but two more votes could have completely changed things.

Thanks once again to everyone who voted, it's always a fascinating task to put together your choices that introduces me to a brilliant selection of music. Even if it does also always screw up my personal BotY CD as I belatedly hear things which really need to go on there. And there is always at least one (hello Lady Blackbird) that really should be on there but I just heard too damned late.

Nice one belboid, as always I have some new stuff to listen to now

I’ve certainly been listening to a wider range of stuff this last couple of years, I pretty much always have something playing when I’m working at home. One of the few positives that has come from the pandemic.

Way too focused on 1961 and 1971 to keep up this year. So Black Country and Black Midi seem to be the best of what I've missed. Not sure my top 10 was up to anything (though I got the Ben LaMar Gay and the Batkovic) but the one I think you all are missing is Archie Shepp & Jason Moran's Let My People Go which made my top spot.

Interestingly (or not, depending how low your interesting threshold is) the second lowest vote for a Number 1 came in 2018. A year I'm sure you all remember if only because it was when I accidentally went to the pub just before the Top 3, was when Low were pipped to the Number 1 by Janelle Monae, so they must be delighted to have gone one better today.

I am surprised at the complete lack of Courtney Barnett, first album made Number 1, second (another from 2018) made it to 7, but this one? Nowhere.

Well, that was all very interesting. The annual album recommendations thread was notably less predictive than it usually is - loads of stuff here that never appeared there, or didn't attract much notice if it did.

I'd love to know how many voted for Mario Batkovic at no. 10. If it was many more than flypanam and me and possibly killer b I'll be amazed, which really brings home just how spread out our (not-so-)collective choices were overall.

similar falls from grace abound - Richard Dawson had a great album out this year (two in fact) and has disappeared from the lineup. Gnod normally do well, nothing this year... etc. It's a pretty wistful and introverted list for the most part though I guess. Low on ragers.

And, yeah I know Spotify is evil, but where else lets me do such a playlist?

Please use the Bandcamp links where available to go support your new favourite bands. After you've listened to them in this glorious playlist.

Got this on now, bookmarking the ones that sound promising, nice one

Good point - amazed that didn't place (I didn't vote for it myself tbf but only because I hadn't properly listened to it until a couple of days ago, after I voted )

30 Chrissy - Physical Release
I'd had this for ages before I found out Chrissy is Chrissy Murderbot. Well done whoever posted this on the Album Recommendations thread - I've had some great times with this album when I should've been working.
7 Bicep - Isles
I listened to this a couple of times and both times I liked it while it was on but couldn't remember anything about it as soon as it finished, and by the time I was putting a list together I'd forgotten it even existed. Maybe I'll give it another go...
