Urban75 Album of the Year 1984

It was a massive disappointment at the time, however looking back on it with forty years' perspective it's just a bit crap. It's not The Specials, it's a Dammers album and while he's a lovely bloke, he's always made unengaging music.
This was the album that had "Free Nelson Mandela" on it, if memory serves.Unengaging?

All in all any one of those would be in the top 15 with an extra single solid vote, so really they are all winners. Or in other words the whole exercise was pointless.... In fact everything is meaningless and we can't find meaning in a meaningless world. And I've been listening to This Mortal Coil again.

Thanks.

My list was pretty international and I think most of it would be fairly well known in its country of origin and then a lot of it is just weird/noise/post punk. But that top one really should be better known. It is much more accessible than people might think. The people involved have a reputation for the avant garde, but really it's about beautiful, powerful, memorably melodic songs albeit with instrumentation that you wouldn't normally hear outside of a classical context.

My list:

Julian Cope - Fried
Long Ryders - Native Sons
Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Linton Kwesi Johnson – Making History
The Cure - The Top
The Fall - Weird & Wonderful World of
Rickie Lee Jones - The Magazine
The Ex - Blueproint for a Blackout
Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Hyaena
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - From Her to Eternity
Foetus - Hole
King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair
Cocteau Twins - Treasure
Pogues - Red Roses for Me
PIL - This is What You Want…
R.E.M. - Reckoning
Subhumans - From the Cradle to the Grave
Cabaret Voltaire - Micro-Phonies

My votes:

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome
2. Prince - Purple Rain
3. Harold Budd and Brian Eno - The Pearl
4. This Mortal Coil - It'll End in Tears
5. Cocteau Twins - Treasure
6. The Fall - The Wonderful & Frightening World of...
7. The Smiths - The Smiths
8. Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade
9. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - From Her to Eternity
10. Madonna - Like a Virgin

Only Frankie and Madge missed the top twenty.

Huh, I've just seen that the first Scratch Acid EP was 1984. But you can't vote for it because it's an EP, and also, importantly, because all the voting has already happened.

So Prince now secures a firm second place, Iron Maiden climb a place, Art of Noise are now up there at 11 and Frankie Goes to Hollywood in at 17 and Madonna with a more respectable 29.

Most importantly Julian Cope is still at 7.
