Urban75 Album of the Year - 2024

10 Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown

Ohhh, so this is what happened to the other one from Portishead. She's done well for herself.

(and made it into the Top 10 thanks to the very final voter, who voted literally two seconds after I had finished everything off and three seconds before I was going to formally close the ballot. Good thing they chose wisely)

9 Charli XCX - Brat

For a moment or three young Charli was solidly in second position. Then I noticed that Brat and it's completely different but also still Brat is actually completely different to Brat. What a summer.

(and it just goes to show how close the rest are. One vote could/would have changed almost everything!)

8 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Wild God

Oh, how the might are fallen. Truly Nick is the Man City of this years chart. Perhaps it is the excessive use of strings? Perhaps we've just heard him do this before. It's still fucking awesome and includes several (more/new) highlights from a very high career. An ode to joy.

6 Nadine Shah - Filthy Underneath

The first entry where I was really tempted to cheat and get it into the top 5, at least. Wafer thin margins between this and the next four albums.

Since her last album, Shah has nursed her mother through terminal cancer, got married and divorced, tried to take her own life and entered rehab. And then made a record about it. And it is, frankly, sublime. It could be depressing as fuck, but it isn't, it's full of beauty, tenderness, humour and even joy. Wonderful.

4 Shellac - To All Trains

Proof I don’t fiddle, as this was tied with Number 3 and lost out cos of my stupid rules.

Something something something when this is over/Leap in my grave like the arms of a lover/And if there’s a heaven, I hope they’re havin’ fun, ’cause if there’s a hell I’m gonna know everyone.” Live your best life.

And now, the traditional pause* for you to make your wild guesses about the Top 3.

Is it as simple as you think? Well, I doubt it, I doubt it very much. In fact, if anyone guesses what they are, I will buy them Urban75. All of it.

* as opposed to the irritating pauses throughout the rest of the list posting.

I wondered about some of the indie darlings that have been placing high on some of the lists - Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman? Maybe insufficient lunch urbanz?

I've only had one of my selections appear so far. Another I'm almost certain will appear as I think it's one you all love, cats, but far less sure about my other rock choice even though it is smashing

1.Nebula, and Black Rainbows - In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal
2.Dirty Three - Love Changes Everything
3. Elephant Tree - Handful of Ten

Well, some of you came closer than expected. Some big names missing, previous big hitters, but.....

3 Nala Sinephro - Endlessness

Sorry, wtf is this? It's…it's….jazz. Proper, old school, jazz. A modern day Alice Coltrane, harp n all. Orchestral, ambient jazz. But much better than that sounds. More of you voted for this album than any other than the Number 1.
