Urban75 Album of the Year 2022 - The Results

Feels like there's more pop music in the list this year than there has been for a while - the contrast between wild avant-rock and radio 6 faves in the top five is particularly dramatic, but it's reflected all the way down the list.

Cheers Knotted! If I'd have put chat pile in my top few would it have been enough, or were Fontaines too far ahead?

If you had put Chat Pile as No.1 it would have squeaked it.

Is 36th place all exclusively lonely number ones, or did anyone maths their way to 36 as well?

Excellent work Knotted were there less submissions this year? (Speak to that fellah) .

4 of mine made the top 20 (Had Fontaines DC but not at no.1) and one more scraped into the top 35 .

I thought the Bjork album had some incredible stuff going on that I'd like to hear expanded on, but it didn't really work as an album, 180th is about right

take us to 50 babe

Stats for geeks

25 lists submitted
418 entries
326 individual albums

I don't know about previous years but I think 326:418 is a particularly high ratio. Lots and lots of albums got one vote. As I say we're approaching musical utopia - no obvious canon except for Fontaines DC.

Interesting! Surprised by the no.1, but then Fontaines have always been a dog whistle type of band for me (ie I can't hear whatever it is that gets people so excited about their music).

Belboid's scoring system would have:

1) Fontaines DC - Skinty FIA
2) Chat Pile - God's Country
3) Horse Lords - Comradely Objects
4) Wet Leg - Wet Leg
5) Beach House - Once Twice Melody
6) The Delines - The Sea Drift
7) Black Midi - hellfire
8) Oren Ambarchi - Shebang
9) Caroline - Caroline
10) Katy J Pearson - Sound of the Morning
11)= Daniel Avery - Ultra Truth
11)= Special Interest - Endure
11)= Kae Tempest - The line is a curve
14) Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
15) Half Man Half Biscuit - The Voltarol Years
16) Horace Andy - Midnight Rocker
17) Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
18) Rachika Nayar - Heaven Come Crashing
19) Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
20) The Beths - Expert in a Dying Field

Much the same but slightly different order.

TBH I thought that was a very rock oriented list. Good stuff on there but what happened to all the hip hop?

No! Amazingly despite everyone going on about him, not one person voted for him.
Oh! I misremembered and thought they were all into Bill Orcutt, who did pretty good considering...

Post your lists please people.

Mine:

Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture

So was Skinty FIA the most universal vote then? Did anyone have it at number one? Was my 8.

It alternated in my top two while I did my list. Radiohead The Smile just edged it in the end though :hmm:

8 from my hastily put together list in the top 50. Plus a couple I’d forgotten about and plenty more to listen to over the holidays.

I did start doing a list on my phone notes at the start of the year which was quickly forgotten about. Need to keep on top of that next year.

Good work Knotted

Éliane Radigue - Occam XXV
Jake Blount - The New Faith
Alvin Curran - Drumming Up Trouble
Sun Ra Arkestra - Living Sky
Stick in the Wheel - Perspectives on Tradition

Forgot that great Derek Bailey thing. Proper old people on my list. Loads more I would have voted for if I had got round to listening to them.

Lí Ban - Rud Nach Léir
The Deadlians - Watch out! Here Come The Deadlians

CMAT - If My Wife New I'd Be Dead
Fontains D.C. - Skinty Fia
Ispíní Na Héireann - The Hard Working Men
Björk - Fossora

I got bored at 10. Not been a massive music year for me, been too sad, then had a big grime retrospective, but I will fight you for my top 3. Very Eire heavy this year

Björk is only really there out of loyalty
Bey and KL both meh (happy to accept that was me and not them, but as they're not popping on the list I don't think so).

My list:

I want so badly to love the new Stick in the Wheel and have tried, but I can't.
