Ukraine and the Russian invasion, Feb 2022 - tangentially related crap

Interesting thread on Wagner Group, mercenaries and PMCs (private military companies):

Wonder how badly the war will hurt them. If Russia's pushing to deploy more mercenaries in Ukraine then that might mean pulling them out of places in Africa and reneging on contracts there which I can't imagine inspires return business. Also they must be taking losses which harm them. All to the good really, mercenaries are a blight on any situation wherever they're from, even worse when they're enabled by and profit a regime like Putins.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere yet (though some posters will probably try to argue it's actually a result of Brexit)

Supermarkets set limits on sale of cooking oil

Some supermarkets are limiting how much cooking oil customers are able to buy as supplies are hit by war in Ukraine. Tesco is allowing three items per customer. Waitrose and Morrisons have limited shoppers to two items each.

The majority of the UK's sunflower oil comes from Ukraine and disruption to exports has led to some shortages and an increased demand for alternatives. The British Retail Consortium says the restrictions are a temporary measure "to ensure availability for everyone."

Anniversary of the Odessa Massacre 2014 where 48 people were killed in clashes between pro unity and federalist supporters.42 of these were federalist supporters who died from suffocation or burns or threw themselves off the Trade Union Centre when it was set alight. The fascist Right Sector was part of the pro unity demonstration.

United Nations report "Ultimately, what is needed is the political will to ensure justice in these cases. The seventh anniversary is the perfect occasion for the authorities to take firm action to move forward on accountability in relation to the 2 May 2014 events and to show that the rule of law is a guiding principle in Ukraine, rather than a biased system based on political positions"

The 7th anniversary would have been a good time for the authorities to take firm action to move forward. The 8th anniversary they had other shit to deal with.

Curfew was imposed in Odessa from May1-May3 to prevent any demonstrations or protests
Nothing to do with the Russians blowing up bridges there, stirring the pot in Moldova and Transnistria, increased landing craft and other naval activity in Crimea, along with the renewed offensive then?

I have to take the opinion RTP (the nearest equivalent to a Portuguese version of the BBC) in good faith but who knows perhaps you are better placed?

They bombed a Russian-built air defence truck, operated by the Government. Not sure what their specific beef was with that item.

What’s the 3:6 ratio with this stuff? :hmm:

Pretty much ideal IIRC - Ukraine has put a lot of effort into developing strains and refining processes that meet the grade. More impressive is that many if not all have been developed by traditional hybridisation techniques and improvements to the refining process, without the GMO approach taken by other countries/companies.

Thanks. :)
