They didn't have anyone non-useless to put up.

If there had been any sort of plan it would probably have been to shut out Badenoch. And some of them may actually have planned that, but none of them remembered that someone would still have to vote for Cleverly to make it work.

Sure, that would be the sensible reaction, but this is the Conservative party we're talking about and recent history suggests they aren't always great at choosing what others might view as the sensible option.

Conservative leadership contender Robert Jenrick has attacked his rival, Kemi Badenoch, accusing her of being "disrespectful" to Tory members by failing to set out policies. The pair are in the final stretches of a campaign to replace Rishi Sunak, who led his party to an historic defeat at the general election in July. Jenrick, who trailed Badenoch for support in the last voting round of MPs, has previously signed up to the yellow card penalty system introduced at the start of the contest and intended to stop "blue-on-blue" infighting. He has put policy on immigration - and a commitment to leaving the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) - at the heart of his campaign, whereas Badenoch has accused Jenrick of offering "easy answers" on the issue.

Conservative leadership candidate Robert Jenrick has claimed that if he was prime minister he would be able to end small boat crossings “in weeks". Speaking ahead of Saturday’s result, which will see either Jenrick or Kemi Badenoch replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party, the MP for Newark told BBC Radio Kent he had resigned from government "because I didn’t want to be another minister who made promises about stopping the boats that I couldn’t keep".

When questioned about how quickly he could stop the boats, Jenrick said: “If my approach from earlier this year was put into place I am confident we could stop the boats in weeks, and stop harm to people in Dover for example.” When asked how he would stop the boats, Jenrick said: “Anyone who arrived here would be deported either to their home country or a safe third country like Rwanda immediately.”
