The Ashes 2021/22

Yep, agree- over-thinking it. It’s also a bit self-important to ramble on about “strategy” & “identity” when you’re being so comprehensively out- performed in every department.

Please also note, England’s ‘best XI’ does not feature Rory Burns, Jos Buttler or Jack Leach.

Reeks a bit of 2013 under Flintoff so far. A shambles. Not even near Nasser’s teams of the 90s who, although way poorer than Australia back then, had a bit of fight about them.

England's entire batting strategy is 'Root, twat it.' and 'Stokes, I know you've not played much, and you've had your own mental health problems, but remember when dis that innings which was the best performance in any sport ever? Well, do that again.'

As some commentator pointed out, you only get one innings like that in your career and Stokes has already had two. Which means he's unlikely ever to do it again and shouldn't be expected to. Stokes hasn't had anyone reliable to bat with for ages either.

It's essentially looking like their plan is it for to be the Stokes show, although he appears to be struggling with both a hand and leg injury (and is still the best player) :D

He was farming the strike earlier with Broad, which should not be the case. Not sure whether that was because he was crippled or Broad is a liability with the bat these days.

Pope. Last 15 innings average 21.6.

One century in 22 Tests.

Product of the Surrey system, was picked up aged about 4 months or something. That's why he gets so many chances. "Can play spin". Was shit against India. Plays on hard pitches, should do well in Australia.

35, 4, 5.

Keeps getting out to Lyon.

Dismal.

Public school boy, a face that’s agreeable to the powers that be. Here, have a cushy No. 6 position for as long as you like.

Liam Livingstone would strike fear in the Aussies….and he can bowl too.

Livingstone is already in Australia I think, playing in the BBL. He plays there every year so must know the conditions a bit better than this current shower.

Warner made the transition from being a white ball blaster to a quality test batsman so I don't see why he couldn't.

Oh maybe not. These are the English players down there at the moment, god knows where livingstone is

England players in BBL 2021-22:
Adelaide Strikers: George Garton
Brisbane Heat: Tom Abell, Ben Duckett
Hobart Hurricanes: Harry Brook, Jordan Thompson
Melbourne Renegades: Reece Topley
Melbourne Stars: Joe Clarke
Perth Scorchers: Laurie Evans, Tymal Mills
Sydney Sixers: Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, James Vince
Sydney Thunder: Sam Billings, Alex Hales, Saqib Mahmood

Maybe Hales - he spends half his life in Sydney. And is a far better batsman than Burns or Hameed. Although that's assuming he'd want to leave what is probably quite a fun life to tour around the country with a pretty miserable lot. For 15k a match.

I wouldn't object to giving him a go, but last time a similar thing was tried, with Jason Roy, it was a disaster. Livingstone's first class record isn't brilliant, but he has at least batted more than two sessions a few times in his career, which Roy had never done.

tbh I'd be more inclined to try out Vince again. Vince is a bit like Malan in that his test record is poor but he looks very good once he's in. And he has scored runs in Aus before.

But there are no great options. Pope looks the part as well until he gets out. Hameed looks promising until he gets out. Buttler looks like he might transfer his white ball skills to tests until he gets out.

The only one I'd drop for the next test is Burns. Aside from anything else, his head's gone, hence the dropped catches. I think he may have one last innings to potentially save his career, because if he is dropped it will be hard for him to come back.

There's zero chance of Alex Hales coming back. And he was very disappointing when he played tests. Regardless of other stuff, he had a decent run and blew it.

Crawley in for Burns next test is my prediction, and no other batting changes.

Other than that, as said above, post-this series defeat, it's more a case of looking at the next generation and seeing what's coming up. I predict Tom Lammonby will play test cricket, but he probably needs a good county season first.

Yeh I'd go for Vince too but again I doubt he'd leave his BBL contract which is probably more lucrative than what he's on and most definitely less fun. But he's a seasoned player downunder. Did the selectors even consider that when choosing their side? Livingstone is huge in the BBL too and has been in great form. Maybe he was offered the chance and said no?

And sadly I think Chris Woakes needs to be dropped for the rest of the series. I had hoped he would show better away form this time, learning how to use the kookaburra like Anderson did. But no. He's just made himself look like an England-only option tbh.

Bit of zip about England this morning, still got to get through Labuschagne and Smith (and Head, and Green) to have any chance tho.
