The American mass shooting thread

It's a shame they can't show the same restraint with people arrested for things like "driving while Black," but it's definitely a good thing that cops are able to get these people into custody without killing them or beating them up so badly it could complicate the case against them - reminds of that incel piece of shit who did his best to get a Toronto cop to kill him after the 2018 van attack but had no success.

The last week has been particularly insane.

Was talking to some random Americans in a VR chat room and it was pretty scary how many had been shot at at some time or other, talking about bullets like it's some kind of particularly dangerous horizontal weather condition.

Interaction with Americans online here (not urban) makes for depressing reading. Face to face is fine, though. Not so many bigots.

That's been outrageously edited to provide the worst possible perspective. You need to see the full context of this. He wasn't sympathising with the shooter at all. He was answering questions about what he had said about his motivations and whether he understood the gravity of what he had done.

Here's more of the video with some context and questions from the press: https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/03/17/jay-baker-bad-day/

I think from that he's also trying to say he shot them because he considered them some kind of sexual temptation.
So the racist cop was quoted out of context?

Well I never.

Sex addiction is a made up thing to excuse behaviours that aren't socially acceptable.

Indeed. I wasn't endorsing this cunt's bullshit. Misogyny is a real thing of course, although I also doubt that is all that was going on. I expect it's not a coincidence that the majority of the victims are of either Korean or Chinese heritage whatever this fucker claims.

I was struck by the implication in his reported 'explanation' that shooting women was somehow 'understandable'.

The cop's choice of words was shitty and seemed to downplay the mass murder while expressing too much sympathy for the shooter, but I guess he was factually correct - the shooter had been kicked out of his parents home the night before for watching porn all day or something.

So the question Georgia lawmakers need to answer is why the fuck is somebody having a 'really bad day' allowed to walk into a store and buy a gun with no waiting period?

Did he buy it the same day?

Yes

I worked for an Atlanta based firm in the 90s and went out there a few times. They had open carry there and loads of people had handguns on their belts. It felt very strange. I once queued behind a bloke in a supermarket who not only had an automatic in a holster but also 4 spare magazines clipped onto it. Totally fucked up place.

I've spent parts of my adult life getting horrified and depressed when I read Transatlantic mass-shooting accounts :(

And also, utterly flabbergasted at most US states' insanely lax gun laws, and further depressed about what looks -- from the outside, anyway -- like completely disfunctional attitudes to guns amongst so many Americans.

I accept there are sensible exceptions -- those anti-NRA, pro-gun-control campaigns linked to above, must have fairly big memberships, surely?:

Maybe more members and supporters of them than I'm aware

But I severely doubt I'd be able to converse rationally/calmly with anyone even a bit gun-crazy in the States :( '

Such chat with such types would best be avoided completely, I reckon, even if your companion is unarmed at the time ...

It does spook you when you come across people openly carrying in public, more so in urban environments. A former GF uncle showed me how wherever he was in his Houston home or pickup, he was never more than 10 ft away from a handgun. Just in case.

Daughter had to take a connection at one of the German (?) airports.

All the guards had machine guns.

She understands why, but it made her totally uncomfortable.

Strictly speaking they're not machine guns, they're submachine guns (meaning they shoot pistol rounds). Some armed police in the UK carry them too and here they are adapted to only fire single shots. The idea is that they are a lot more accurate than hand held guns and also provide a bigger visual security statement.

Saw the same at grand central Station in New York. SMGs and Kevlar, right next to big ad posters that read: Report Suspicious Behavior.

Fairly big pistol rounds in quick succession tbf.

Rifles fire HV rounds, pistols and smgs don't.

Think about it. If they shot really powerful rounds the gun would go all over the place because of the recoil

I meant to type 'higher' there. But was thinking of the wrong gun anyway.
But there are pistols that fire high-velocity rounds.

Such as...

Depends what you consider 'high-velocity', but +P rounds for .357's get called that (shade under twice the speed of sound at muzzle).
Not in the AMR league, obviously.

FN-57 seems to be the one most mentioned in terms of law enforcement.

Is the ultimate home gunsmith went to jail for his frankly rather Moonbat beliefs and he was British 🇬🇧 yay go us😁.

Unfortunately the lufty SMG has not been used to defend anyone. Its turned up in criminal gangs in Australia.
The last German synagogue had a pair one partly 3d printed😟.

Turns out unlimited access to automatic weapons isn't a good thing who knew?

It looks a bit shonky. Reminds me of those things builders use for sealing up stuff.

It works still better quality than the SA80a1🙄😭.

Was that the plastic one? Perhaps the one my mate raved about in our early teens til he joined the Army and kept breaking them (something something brittle plastic shit if I recall correctly).
