The American mass shooting thread

stereotype-busting human-interest story

here's a detail not in that article

"The gunman, who Mr. Fierro estimated weighed more than 300 pounds"

Police named the victims of this shooting without "deadnaming" them. And, yes, I realize the irony of using that term in the context of actually naming the dead:

"We respect all of our community members, including our LGBTQ community," Vasquez said. "Therefore, we will be identifying the victims by how they identified themselves and how their families have loved and identified them."

He reads their names: Kelly Loving; Pronouns are “she/her;” Daniel Aston; Pronouns are “he/him;” Derrick Rump; Pronouns are “he/him;” Ashley Paugh; Pronouns are “she/her;” Raymond Green Vance; Pronouns are “he/him."

Authorities decided to take a rare but deliberate step of taking time verifying the correct names and pronouns of the victims by working with their families, and not merely relying on what the coroner’s office provides, a Colorado Springs city spokeswoman told USA TODAY on Monday.

My experience of Colorado Springs is as an ultraconservative town so I'm a bit surprised.

Re the right's escalating attack on LGBT+ people:

bar chart showing increase
These anti-LGBTQ+ actions represent a still-modest but growing fraction of all right-wing protests and demonstrations in the U.S. In CCC’s data, the monthly share of right-wing events with anti-LGBTQ+ claims stayed at or close to zero from the start of collection in 2017 until mid-2022. By September of this year, however, it had increased to about 16 percent.

If you’re wondering just how ugly it’s getting, look no further than a September 24 protest against a drag bingo event at First Christian Church in Katy, Texas. Promoted on Steve Bannon’s War Room show, that protest drew not just Proud Boys but also Patriot Front and members of the Aryan Freedom Network waving flags with swastikas.

What these charts don’t show (but CCC is also tracking) are the frequent and usually successful counters to these anti-queer protests. You can see one in reporter Candace Bernd’s Twitter thread on the recent protest in Katy, but there’ve been many others, too.

Escalating Right-Wing Attacks on the LGBTQ+ Community

This isn't a spoof site.

I directly blame Fox News, Steven Crowder, the Daily Wire, including and especially the disgusting creepy Matt Walsh. These people continue to have blood on their hands. I wish someone would shoot Crowder, tbh. There I said it, in Minecraft obviously. I find him and his rampant homo/transphobia )and all round bigotry) utterly vile. Walsh is a fucking monster
I've come across Crowder too. I got sucked into a YouTube rabbit hole of his output after a delayed flight. He really is a cunt of the very lowest order. A real monstrosity of a person. He seems to genuinely enjoy his amorality, and his obsession with gay and trans stuff is at mindbending intensity.

He is everything wrong with social media: massively entitled insecure (he wears a gun ffs) frat boy manbaby coddled by the algorithm. YT will do nothing about his rampant hate speech and bigotry because he makes them money. This is a cancer that needs rooting out, the events of the last few days alone are ample evidence why. But this toxic shit is everwhere. Just go to discord and hear how casual ableist rhetoric has become normalised. Calling people 'retarded' or 'autistic'. I fucking hate it, and I fucking hate him

Is discord generally like this? I've heard conflicting reports (maybe it has nice bits and horrible bits).

And the social media companies facilitate and profit from this. They've as much blood on their hands as anyone.

I'm sure there are nice servers, after all there are loads of them. But having ventured into the more philosophically/debate oriented ones (religion/politics themed) my experience = steer well clear. It's all sweaty young men who think they know it all having read some philosphy. It's utterly horrific

Tragically there is nothing about this that will change. Perhaps Twitter will collapse, but then something else will take its place. Musk will just throw billions at Twitter Mark 2 and let all the scumbags run rampant again.

End capitalism

He wishes he was a frat boy! I doubt he was ever invited to join the boys - that's his issue. He seems to me to be a glaring example of one of the great dangers of bullying - the bully grows up as a cunt with no love for anyone. He certainly is a definitive manbaby. One of his favourite lines seems to be that feminists are ugly, which I think translates to 'none of the popular girls would fuck me - they did everything they wanted to, but never me, boohoo'.

I watched one of his videos where he burst into a rape crisis centre wearing a tutu, and told the people he found there that they probably hadn't been raped but had merely misunderstood the primal need that men have to have rough sex with the kind of women they don't marry. Basically, they were sluts, and it wouldn't have happened if they'd worn their chastity pledge rings (he was a virgin until marriage, as was his wife - I learned that in another video).

He seems fond of his 'not gay' tee shirt. I think it's interesting that he always has some little twerp parked in the corner, his studio gimp, laughing manically at his endless stream of cruelty. He seems to get these guests on, where he speaks over them at a hundred miles an hour, he has no interest in their perspective or agreeing any common ground. He's well known enough by now that you'd think most appearance requests by him would be rejected.

He is without a single redeeming quality. I'm no shrinking violet but I'd feel quite unsafe if I was in his company or found myself alone in a street with him, or was at all unfortunate enough to find myself anywhere within his purview. There is something hideously compelling about his performance (hence my knowledge of him), kind of like driving past a car crash on the opposite carriageway. It's appalling. You know it'll stay with you, but you can't not.

I can see that a twisted mind, watching him straight up, could quickly run into difficulty. See also, Dan Wootton.

There are thousands of these fuckers, preying on misfits and the mentally ill. Whether they believe the stuff they are saying is the only real questio - in Crowders case, he's a true believer. A fucking gargoyle.

Makes sense. The person who told me it was all fluffy is on servers dedicated to fans of particular videogames / modders and suchlike.

I really don't like Wootton, but I'd never have put him in Crowder's league of open cuntery.
Maybe I'm just missing a few things, though.

details: first entry here

Seems hard to say without more detail. Perpetrator at that point is likely lying in a pool of blood just like a lot of the victims, and one of the few people in the room who is upright is screaming military lingo including that the scene is clear and the shooter is down. Can imagine that a shooter might have tried that one in the past.
