The American mass shooting thread

i find that over the past few years i've accumulated seven or eight multitools, a decent swiss army knife, three different leathermans (leathermen?), a gerber one and a boker one. obviously they share some component features but the simple fact of the matter is i've overbought. i can't help thinking that the lady in the picture might have better limited herself to a couple of pistols, a couple of shotguns, a couple of assault rifles and so on, as her impressive collection must occupy more time gathering dust than being actually used. maybe she could lose the stripey monstrosity on the left, some of the revolvers and pistols and a couple of shotguns and replace them with a barratt m107a1 .50 sniper rifle, which would complement the other weapons she possesses while adding a capability i don't see represented among her guns

Ten dead in supermarket shooting in Buffalo, NY, by 18yr old self-professed white supremacist and anti-Semite.

Twitter stuff about shooter’s motives etc.

<edit: decided to snip this bit out because they don’t need to get their ideas spread>

Mentions Soros and Sadiq Khan, usual derivative crap.

Fuck this terrorist shit.

Wow, only 18 and already so full of hate.

No death penalty in NY state so I guess this piece of shit will have 60+ years in prison to ponder the error of his ways.

It’s just become part of culture now. I remember how angry Columbine made me but now it’s just business as usual. The NRA nuts have actually stopped saying ‘thoughts and prayers’ and ‘now is not the time’, etc because they’ve won. Waste of time. It was Sandy Hook which made me realise I shouldn’t bother with an emotional response to this stuff.

Hubby would agree with you.
I told him about the shooting, and he asked why it is even on the news. For him, it seems to be a daily occurrence.

I've stopped getting shocked about it. They (Americans) don't seem to care and are not doing anything about it, so meh!!!

Get what you're saying.

And that causes sadness, too. The idea that the loss of human life is met with indifference.

Guess that's what these racist fucks want, for people to give up. Take it all in their stride.

Yep. Like most right wing positions. Designed to make people give up. Subverting democratic norms and checks and balances. That part of the political spectrum which enables and suits the psychopath.

Fucking piece of shit facillitated by the piece of shit firearms lobby.

Honestly it’s such an elephant in the room thing (more guns more shootings) i just find it…I’m numb. I think the reason the NRA isn’t sending out the ‘thoughts and prayers/not the right time to discuss the issue’ in too high profile recently is i think even they recognize its become such a cliché it doesn’t have any resonance anymore. When i get into an argument with a civilian gun nut i always use the example of the bolt gun that is used to kill cattle. The one in No Country for Old Men. It does exactly what a gun does (drives a piece of steel into an animal to stun/kill it). But its not been fetishized like an AR-15. It doesn’t have a trigger guard over which you can lay a straight finger to indicate you might know what you're doing.

I see this

and think that a gun will not stop her being groomed!!
They will groom her by using the guns.

But really, the idea that a gun will make you untouchable is total nonsense.

There are times when I think they making the gun culture main stream.

And then, I see the potential revoke of abortion, and think that Christianity and guns for all.......

So, so glad that there is a border between us and them.

Totally. I actually got threatened by a US border security guard at Peace Arch for smoking a cigarette by a fucking permanent concrete and metal ashtray IN THE BORDER CROSSING. A lot of my heroes are American but that Wild West mentality needs a look at. I forget where I read this but I feel it has some truth to it. The USA was born from war. Canada was born from negotiation.

The whole grooming thing ("ok groomer") is gaining traction as a slur to just about everyone who opposes the likes of DeSantis and his Putinesque/Section 28 bill.

Expecting more and more attacks on LGBT people as this goes on.

Odd thing to happen to you.

Change out your comment about negation, and change it to compromise.

Back in school, we were taught about their bang-bang-shoot-them-up history.
I always liked the stories of the RCMP taking the American's guns away during the gold rush days.

Fast forward many a decade, and I bet Canadian officials are still taking away their guns.

"but I have the right to bear arms" "not in Canada" :D

No clue what you are on about. I'm Canadian and don't really care about your laws.

Also, not sure what you are on about with LGBT - it's an American girl - but ok - yeah team - what ever.....

Not odd really. I was going to Seattle on the Greyhound from Vancouver. First of the bus so I asked the driver where I could have a smoke while I waited for the bus to fill back up. The security guy yelled at me 'SIR. YOU'RE BREAKING THE LAW'. With his hand on his piece BTW. Totally disproportionate response. On reflection you're right about compromise. The history of European colonization of North America is blood soaked. Just feel the soil was a bit more blood soaked South of the border.

What a horrible encounter.

While I was growing up, we got new neighbours.
The family was American, he was a border customs person.

Nasty man!!!!

Going back a long way to when JC was posting, there were many comments about how the US customs behaved. There were many examples of abuse.
It would seem that nothing has really changed.

JC is the only Urbanite I've actually met in real life. We shared a pizza and a few pints when I first landed here 10 years ago. Really nice guy.

and every time you mention that story, I turn green with envy!!!

Lynne7 also spent time with him.

I hope he is doing well!!!

Am Irish . Reckon it's important to give a fuck about American laws, because what happens in that place tends to ripple across the globe and gain influence and admirers. These laws are inflaming hatred against LGBT folk. Which is yet another huge section of the people who are being targeted by the far right.

The words "grooming" and "groomer" are being increasingly used to smear people who speak out against homophobia and bigotry (especially LGBT and their allies) as paedophiles.

The Don't Say Gay law in Florida, prohibits any teachings on or discussions of LGBT at schools. Similar to the crackdown on sexuality in Putin's Russia and 80s Britain - the infamous Section 28

Section 28: What was it and how did it affect LGBT+ people? - BBC Three

‘Don’t Say Gay’: Disney clashes with DeSantis over Florida bill

Republicans Say ‘Groomer’ to Put a Nice Face on Homophobia

The worry is that there will be more needless massacres and murders with the kind of tensions and hatreds being inflamed.
