Spanish Political News

Latest poll indicates that just 33.5% of Catalans are in favour of independence, so perhaps all those people demonstrating against independence weren't "bussed" from elsewhere in Spain after all...

El apoyo a la independencia baja hasta el 33% en Cataluña

The great majority would like to see an agreement between all sides to hold a legal referemdum, however. And for what's worth, the majority of the Spanish people as a whole would also like to see a legal referendum taking place.

Interesting 'side show' seems to be developing, with the Belgian Immigration Minister suggesting they could offer asylum to Puigdemont...

This hasn't gone done very well with Spain...

Belgium could offer Catalan leader asylum: minister

Various media ourtlets are reporting that Puigdemont, and others, have gone to Belgian to claim asylum...

Ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has left Spain and travelled to Brussels, Spanish government officials have said.

The Spanish media reports that the former leader is accompanied by an unspecified number of other members of the Catalan government. The group are expected to make a joint statement later today.

If true, it's an interesting development & a massive headache for the EU.

A government in exile; it's all going very Cold War. The Spaniards will, presumably, issue a European arrest warrant. What larks!

I'm not convinced that's definitive, though.

Nor am I, but I guess Belgian & Spain will just have to fight over it, dragging the whole EU into the dispute.

I can't help thinking this could be a smart move by Puigdemont.

Puigdemont was in the Belgian capital with former members of his Cabinet to meet Flemish nationalist politicians and planned to seek asylum, according to Spanish broadcaster La Sexta. Belgian State Secretary for Asylum Policy and Migration Theo Francken on Saturday said Puigdemont could seek political asylum in Belgium.

“Catalan people who feel politically threatened can ask for asylum in Belgium,” Francken told public broadcaster VRT. “That includes President Puigdemont. This is 100 percent legal.”

governments in exile more napoleonick or second world than cold war.

There a groups claiming to be to be true governments of various Central and East European countries holed up in bedsits all over West London until the 1990s. That's the model Puigdemont risks following.

Well, the Belgian Immigration Minister seems to think so.

Just wait till the Walloons start kicking off (copyright Paul Mason) he won't be so happy then. Holland and France should have a land grab and put an end to this sad excuse for a country. :)

I would think that they might be after Belgium's footballers too. Particularly Holland.

Well Holland certainly need to acquire some decent footballers from somewhere!

[Ticker] Report: Catalan separatist leaders in Brussels

Former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont travelled to Brussels on Monday with other members of his government, Spanish media reported, citing Catalan and Spanish government sources. Puigdemont was said to be meeting with Flemish nationalists. On Sunday, Belgian asylum minister Theo Franken, from the Flemish nationalist N-VA party, said that Puigdemont and his allies could get political asylum in the country. He was later contradicted by prime minister Charles Michel.

"Oh, and since your country is breaking up, can we have Edin Hazard for England?"
- No, but you can have Fellani.
"Oh. :("
