Saudi Arabia chosen to head human rights panel whilst sentencing citizen to crucifixion

Easter is only around the corner, on a Friday as always, this could be quite a good time.
Should we be even speaking to these people? I see Obama is due to visit Saudi in a week or two.

Interesting programme, certainly worth watching but not for those easily shocked, upset or have little knowledge about those nice Saudi people and their religious police.

Saudis Pressure U.N. to Remove Them From List of Children’s Rights Violators

...On Monday, just four days after adding to the list the Saudi-led military coalition that has been bombing Yemen, Mr. Ban announced that he was scrubbing it off while he awaits a review conducted jointly with a team from the accused coalition.

In a statement, Mr. Ban said he had invited the coalition “to send a team to New York as soon as possible for detailed discussions.”

“Pending the conclusions of the joint review, the Secretary-General removes the listing of the Coalition in the report’s annex,” the statement added.

Minutes later, the Saudi ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah bin Yahya Almouallimi, appeared before reporters at the organization’s headquarters to contradict Mr. Ban, asserting that the removal was “unconditional and irreversible.”

“There was no foundation for this listing to be made in the first place,” he said....

A spokeswoman said: "It is not good enough to merely criticise other countries from the sidelines.

"Only by working with Saudi Arabia are we able to bring about the changes we would like to see in the country."

strange how they never said that about a) the third reich, or b) the soviet union

e2a: i wonder what the changes they would like to see in fact are, because from where i am it looks like they want to see 47 executed in one day

Lord Rothermere and the Daily Mail certainly never wanted to help the Third Reich to become more moderate. He just wanted us to be more like them; and challenge those who: "exaggerated to give the impression that Nazi rule was a blood-thirsty tyranny."

We must be careful with these people, we wantctheirccash for our guns and of course, their oil. The sooner we use more renewables and less oil the better.

"The Foreign Office said the British expertise was being used to improve the Saudi justice system, including human rights compliance, rehabilitation for abuse victims and legal aid."

Well they're doing a marvellous job so far. In fact, since I started typing this sentence, Saudi Arabia has hardly executed anyone.

Ramadan finishes on 5th July ( next Tuesday ). I suspect the executions will begin in Saudi and Indonesia soon after :hmm:

Theresa May has been urged to throw Saudi Arabia off the UN Human Rights Council

Politicians and campaigners will demand Theresa May vote against Saudi Arabia retaining the powerful chairmanship of the UN Human Rights Council after a year which saw the country's government savagely bomb Yemen, commit vast numbers of beheadings, a mass execution and detain activists.

Their call, on World Humanitarian Day, comes ahead of a critical UN vote on whether Saudi Arabia remains in the post, which it has controversially held since this time last year.

But despite the repeated and well publicised atrocities of the Middle Eastern state, ministers still refuse to say whether they will back the kingdom or not.

It follows recently emerged details of the huge quantities of military aircraft, bombs and arms the UK is selling Saudi Arabia, some of which have been used in a Yemeni campaign described as a “human catastrophe”....

We must not do anything to upset the nice people of Saudi; we want thier oil and money for our arms, not forgetting someone to question our terrorist suspects.

Boris Johnson's remarks about Saudi Arabia 'not the government's view'

Boris Johnson was not representing the government’s views on Saudi Arabia when he accused the state of abusing Islam and acting as a puppeteer in proxy wars, Downing Street has said.

The foreign secretary was setting out his own views on Saudi Arabia and Iran at a conference in Rome last week, the prime minister’s spokeswoman said on Thursday, but would be sticking to the government’s line when he visited Saudi ministers this weekend....

Whilst it it is nice to see Johnson criticising the Saudis I am finding it difficult to believe that he will have done it purely for altruistic purposes. More likely he sees it in some way as a means of positioning himself as an alternative to May.

No surprises there, thanks the the nasty, capitalist, Tory party :(
Could we send mother Theresa and Amber Rudd over their to live. 6 months should be enough to help them change their minds.

No shit Sherlock

Saudi Arabia has 'clear link' to UK extremism, report says - BBC News

Saudi Arabia is the chief foreign promoter of Islamist extremism in the UK, a new report has claimed.

The Henry Jackson Society said there was a "clear and growing link" between Islamist organisations in receipt of overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.

The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations...

Though I am not much liking the source for this rather obvious news. The Henry Jackson Society could in it's own way be considered be considered extreme but I suppose it's respectable extremism so that's ok then.

I hear those awfully nice people in Saudi are hoping to put another crowd of people to the sword, including someone who is disabled and in a wheelchair and someone who is a juvenile. Ed millibland has written to mother Theresa to request her intervention...that will do the trick no doubt

You can certainly tell the strength of a nation by the way it murders people for possibly daring to question it
