A Russian ship fired “signal munitions” near a German military helicopter in the Baltic Sea, the German foreign minister has revealed
Annalena Baerbock mentioned the incident on the sidelines of a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels, but did not provide any details or information as to when the incident occurred.
German media has reported that the helicopter was undertaking a reconnaissance mission.
It is not clear if the Russian ship fired directly at the helicopter or what kind of “signal munition” was used. Ships commonly carry signal flares to use in emergency situations.
Ms Baerbock added that ships bypassing sanctions related to Russia’s war in Ukraine frequently transit through the Baltic Sea.
She also announced that Baltic Sea patrols would be increased to monitor pipelines and data cables after several acts of suspected Russian sabotage.
The German foreign minister on Tuesday suggested that German troops could be sent to Ukraine to enforce a future ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow, although chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday said the idea was “out of the question” for him.
