Victory Day - May 8th and May 9th celebrate the day the allied forces beat the Third Reich and the Axis and stopped the terrible machine of fascist destruction that brought deaths of more than 50 million people. It celebrates nothing less than International unity of people and their enormous common sacrifice made in the name of humanity.
This victory does not belong to modern governments fighting each other to monopolize it: either trying to use it for its own propaganda and justification of its nightmarish actions or trying to re-write history and white wash Nazi-collaborators, while supporting radical groups and profiteering from wars all over the globe.
It belongs to those who silently watch us from the past: the international fighters and partisans, who gave their lives on the battlefield, on the sea and in the skies fighting the fascist monster. All those who died in concentration camps, were burned alive in Belarusian villages, tortured to death by Gestapo and 731 unit.
The Soviet people consisting of Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians, Armenians and several dozen different ethnicities paid an unspeakable price fighting off the Nazis and turning the tide of war. People of the US, UK and Australia, guerilla fighters and underground antifascist cells in Italy, Spain, Greece, Czech, Slovakia, Poland, France, Yugoslavia and numerous other countries fought a bloody war on the Third Reich and local Fascist regimes. Regardless of the geopolitical hunger and intrigues of the leaders, it was the common people that united in their fight against fascism, against systematic enslavement and extermination of entire peoples.
As long as we remember their sacrifice, we still have a chance to stand together against war, tyranny and dictatorship, still have a hope to build a new world without nations, borders and suffering.
