Difficult one - he was well liked, he wanted the job, and he was bright enough to understand both the big issues and the detail, which aren't things you can say about every defence secretary, but he wasn't able to secure the money that he accepted defence needs, and obviously the NSC thing cast a shadow over his ability and willingness to keep a secret.

PM would have been preferred, but if it's a choice between Williamson and some arse like Patel or Raab...

it's Ben Wallace (my MP) who I know almost nothing about. He is ex-forces though fwiw.
