Octopus farming is ‘unethical and a threat to the food chain’

horrible places. Most of them get shot and dumped.
agree with that, I could take you to at least half a dozen pits around here, on each of the three shooting estates within a shortish drive. [locations from before covid]
the last time I looked into one, not only were there a lot of game birds in it, but I could see at least two foxes and a badger ...

Blimey. Did you take any photos?

Yes, but under & among trees so very dark - I was using a torch ... and holding my nose with the other !

I sent the location and prints of the "best" couple of images to the Police's wildlife crime officer, council's environmental / animal health and LACS.
Only LACS bothered to acknowledge !

Went back about two months later, and someone had put some rubble and soil into the pit. It still stank, though.
Oh, and the nearby area for off-road parking had been seriously obstructed by boulders, and the trees had some had some crappy anti-personnel barbed wire draped about.

There's no excuse for that. There's some hunters here who hunt deer purely for sport, but they at least have the meat processed and give it to food banks.

Any chance you can PM me the location, prints, and names of the shoots please?

Most shooters will be horrified by this and will organise a boycott of the sites and some suitable exposure.

I'll see if I can find the negs, and the other info - no promises, as I've been clearing out a lot of stuff over lockdown and I did dump a load of apparently random paperwork and other stuff that had been damaged, it had been stored in what turned out to be a damp shed, thanks to Storm Ciara.

I'll look up the grid reference for you. IIRC it was up near the Alston / Nenthead area, but I might be remembering wrong ... as I say, I know where there are several dumps around the whole area.
[when I can find the right scale map - currently, that box is under a pile of other stuff, I think]

Although, I doubt I would have had the name of the actual landowner / shoots.

No worries.

What are the names of the 3 shooting estates you mention in post #151 though? Are they where the pits are?

No, that's based on what was said by someone I know - he used to do some beating, but had a very unpleasant experience a few years ago with a bullying & racist "toff".
I'll drag my memory for the info, but since I don't know the boundaries, there will be some guesswork involved.

might the weardale estate have been one of them?

Please do. These sightings generally turn out to be absolutely fabricated nonsense, so it would be good to get some solid evidence.
