Yet another octopus ability I didn't know about before... apparently some octopus experts say they don't have 8 legs, just two legs and six arms, thus:
"Behold! An immense polymorphic creature throws out her colours into deep space. She is a mothership, teeming with a multitude of lives. A living breathing biome, crackling and spitting with cosmic energy, she bears the weight of a thousand worlds. She rears her head slowly and inexorably due to a bothersome thought. She is aware that things are changing, that the place and the life forms that she loves and cares for are becoming conspicuously inconspicuous. She starts. And in fear she bellows a tremendous call that bestows an omen into the world. ‘Be warned, you may change my colours such that they are not to your liking.’"
Plans for the world’s first commercial octopus farm are well advanced – just as science discovers more about this curious, intelligent and affectionate animal. Can it be done ethically?
One thing about all that changing colour to blend in with their background as camouflage... the octopus is colour blind and only sees in monochrome, so it's the skin itself that senses the backround colour
