Mary Wollstonecraft memorial statue provokes mixed reaction

So it seems. It's just very generic. I feel like I've seen the 'molten something frozen in time' sculpture motif in so many mediocre shows. And definitely probably some of them thought up by people on ket and acid muttering 'inchoate...forces...emergent...life' to themselves at 5am and thinking they're geniuses. I'm not one for ranting against all conceptual art, but this really seems to be a big name churning out shite.

To be fair her main public pieces (Britten in Aldeburgh, the Wilde one, and this latest thing) have come in for pretty severe criticism from art critics/artists too. Pretty much for those reasons. Uninspired, banal etc.

The shaped work she does reminds me of blobs of slag more than anything else. Actually I think that's what I really dislike about the base of this piece in particular - reminds of the very basic level of casting where you're pissing about pouring pewter into various things.

Hot dog, jumping frog, all obloquy.

It's been a word for ages. Just this is the first time it has ever been used in a sentence on the internet.

I went to have a look yesterday -- it was pretty busy, especially as it was chucking it down. It looks better IRL than in the pictures -- the bit at the bottom looks a bit freeform torso but the figure of the woman looks kind of like it was stuck on as an afterthought. The whole thing is also quite small.

There was a lot of random chit chat with strangers. I specially liked the guy who told me (at length) that he thought the people complaining about the naked figure were 'missing the point'. So that was nice.

Good on the ground reportage Sue

I'm so happy that the internet has a picture of this, it's the worst piece of public art i've personally ever seen, spotted earlier this year from a car in the outskirts of a town called Pilzen in the Czech Republic, surrounded by flats where people live, who have to see this every day. It is also huge.

Tbf, I can’t see a point either (maybe he means the somewhat phallic looking bit near the tiny woman’s left hand).

How far is the statue from the nearest deep body of water?

What? You think we should chuck it in..? The nearest canal's maybe a bit over a mile away but not sure it's very deep... :hmm:

I've just walked through Newington Green this morning, I didn't go over the road to look at the statue closely - the overall silver colour is quite noticeable from a distance :D
I'm wondering if it might look better (for my taste at least) when it's aged and weathered a bit?

This is quite troubling if an accurate quote:

Theres a really troubling chunk of hambling at the begnning of this, considering the charity that it was made for supported people with mental health difficulties who were often also abuse survivors (I was one of them).

My first volunteering/participant session there was womanning the tea urn at the launch of this at the london lesbian and gay film festival at the bfi in an orange tabard - I didn't see the film until years later.
Bleugh.

All the amorphomous blob was described originally as "organic matter" :hmm:
I hate it. I'm knitting her a scarfy shawl thing at the moment.

I'm also trying to dig out an old picture for a future "who wore it best?" post, considering someone gave her a matching "clothing" to something I used to wear. I never expected to be outfit twins with Everybarbie :hmm:

I formulated a plan for some feminist art in response/to fit the brief as soon as I saw the thing. I'm making it happen, but having to get other women to do some of the work that's beyond my capability.

Bearing in mind that these photos are already in the public domain, in the context of the festival I was open-mic'ing at, and I've chopped off half my own head. The context was supposed to be specifically non sexual.
(Nod to mods that I am posting this with fully informed consent, but only this).

It was a long time ago, I've done the same gig a couple of times since, but stayed fully clothed :hmm:

WHO WORE IT BEST?

I wish I'd had a face mask cape too tbf . It would have saved unforeseen difficulties exiting the stage backwards in a relatively dignified manner.
