Local Elections 2018

I'm *so* not checking results until well into tomorrow (Friday 4th) morning!

Or more like afternoon onwards, for those lazy/slow-counting councils .... :p

I never vote anyway :)

At least, not when there aren't any elections ;)

What are the residency requirements? I think you have to at least live in the local authority area don't you?
i don't think so. I stood in Lambeth once when i was living in Wandsworth. No-one told me I couldn't.

Anyway - voted for myself today, the only person on the ballot form I knew wasn't a wanker!

Not looking very promising so far, is it? I was hoping for (but not really expecting) a major Labour scalp like Wandsworth. Would've liked to see May more vulnerable - doesn't look like that's happened.

Greens comfortably hold my ward. Tories gain a couple on the council. Not seen the %s. So can't say much more yet.

I don't know how anyone could look at recent polling and be surprised at the results we've seen so far (other than the lib dem gains, although they've been performing well at by elections lately so maybe it shouldn't be too much of a shock).

It's a bit disappointing there isn't more weeping Tories, but where else was that UKIP collapse going? This was always going to be a tricky night.

It looks like Labour have failed to gain Barnet, a key target. But it's the Tory gains in places like Nuneaton and Amber Valley that worry me. These sort of Midlands small town swing marginals that Labour needs to take at the general election.

Sure, but if Labour were really heading for Downing Street you'd have expected some progress? I always thought the ideas of taking Westminster Council or Kensington and Chelsea a bit far fetched. But Labour have failed in Barnet, Wandsworth, Hillingdon.

Didn’t vote as only vote for Sheffield regional mayor, which we voted against joining in February.

Let's face it eh? This country has a significant proportion of complete cunts.

e2a I should more accurately say england as I live in Wales.

Agreed. This is what happens in two party politics, the idea that it is in any way remotely "disastrous" for Labour is cloud cuckoo nonsense.

EDIT: More interesting is that I've not seen any marked increase in turnout. There were claims that the increased turnout at the GE would flow into local elections, and thus help Labour. I was always skeptical of that claim, GEs and LEs are very different beasts.

Hard to disagree with this, really:

"BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said the question set to be raised after tonight was whether we had seen the "high watermark of Corbynism".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "There was a sense after the general election that this was a man on a charge, a man on the momentum, a man who had built up this massive party.

"Last night, that sort of Corbyn momentum seemed to stall and in some significant areas outside of London, seemed to go backwards."

He said the Conservatives had "held their ground", and "hugely benefitted" from the collapse of the UKIP vote, but after eight years in power, it went against the rule of thumb in local elections where the sitting government normally "get a kicking".

"There is no sign of a major haemorrhage in Tory support," he added."

From here.

Labour should be giving this inept government a right kicking now. If they don't listen to criticism like the above, they won't win the next General Election.

Disappointingly it's looking like Tories will hold here (Barnet) despite having NOC beforehand after they deselected one of their councillors, and despite the woeful performance of their outsourcing everything policy. A lot of people will point to the antisemitism issue, although I'm not sure even in Barnet my fellow Jews are a large enough group to swing the vote (and most of the ones we know would still vote Labour, I'd have thought), but I shouldn't be surprised if we have a higher turnout than other groups. I wonder if the Labour vote was split by Lib Deb/Green/Women's Equality protest votes?

No it's not. It shows a complete ignorance of political history. Look at the performance of the two parties in the 60s/70s. Those elections were decided on very small margins. Look at the situation in the US or Aus again, two party systems with very little in it. Look at how after the very poor mid-terms Obama beat Romney.

Oh yeah. We're in P&P, aren't we? Sorry, I forgot. First post in an age and I've got 'a complete ignorance of political history'. Thanks for that. :D

It'll be interesting to look at the age breakdown of who voted and who didn't. I do wonder if a lot of younger voters who backed Corbyn see local elections as a bit irrelevant. If they stayed at home, they may come back out at the next general. If they voted Liberal Democrat or even Tory, that's really bad news.

I know Killer B doesn't like betting odds, but it is worth mentioning the exchange odds have moved significantly towards the Tories overnight. Make of that what you will.
