Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship, and beat people on board. Fatalities reported.

So Israel is the policeman?

International waters you fuckwit. Israel isn't the copper, Israel is the crim.

The problem with coming late to these kinds of threads, is it's like being that skinny guy out of Super Bad, walking into the locker room of an american college football team, pre game.

You've seen it in films. They've got paint smeared on their faces, and they're roaring and yelling at each other, and slamming each other on their shoulder pads. They've got their testosterone worked up for the big game.

So I walk in and say something at odds with the prevailing mood, and all I get is the testosterone, in the form of smilies, personal remarks, low blows etc. Because the team is too pumped up at this point to do much more than incoherent vocalizing.

Actually, it's more like an old dance than a football game. :)

Are you able to talk without gnashing your teeth there, Tidy? :D

What happened was that the Israeli Government and Cabinet meet a number of time to decide what they would do. In the end they decided to make a heaverley armed night-time commando raid on a humanitarian convoy, which appears to have ended in the death of 19 innocent civilians.

This decision was made by the same people that make decision and have control over 200 or 300 nuclear weapons, I see today the Times is reporting,

Why not at least try to inform yourself?

Pro-Palestinian activists vowed yesterday to send a convoy of aid ships to break an Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, despite warnings it will be stopped and a sail ban from normally sympathetic Cyprus.

Eight ships, including four cargo vessels and a Turkish passenger ferry carrying 600 people, were heading towards Gaza in defiance of a three-year Israeli closure on the sliver of desert territory, home to 1.5 million Palestinians.

"We are planning on going. This is not going to stop us. The boats are already on their way," said Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza Movement.

Israel criticised the activists for what it described as a propaganda stunt, while Turkey urged Israeli authorities to treat the convoy as humanitarian aid. A Turkish human rights group is one of the organisers.

Cyprus, which activists have used as a launch pad for shipping missions before, said it would not allow any vessels to sail from its ports to Gaza. The activists said they would press ahead regardless of the ban, and that the flotilla had never planned to dock at any of Cyprus' ports.

The boats would converge at a meeting point in international waters east of Cyprus, probably late on Friday, and then head across the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea towards Gaza, Berlin told Reuters.

Israel has urged the convoy to turn back, saying its navy was prepared to intercept it. Israel says relief aid is already flowing into Gaza though approved channels.

"If they were really interested in the wellbeing of the people of Gaza, they would have accepted the offers of Egypt or Israel to transfer humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said.

"Instead they have chosen a cheap political stunt," he said, referring to the activists.

Israeli naval commandos have held drills in preparation for boarding and searching the convoy. Activists faced arrest and deportation and their cargo would be confiscated for possible transfer by Israel to Gaza, Israeli military officials said.

I think the best plan would be to crew all further aid ships entirely with US citizens. Either the Israelis won't kill them or America will start taking a harder line once it's their citizens the Israelis are using their military aid to shoot. win/win.

oh good, i was waiting for what is going to happen next.

what's going to happen next? is this incident going to throw israel into complete isolation?

That they might be killed by the israelis.

I'm sure they thought it might get veryn tense yes. But not that they'd be murdered in international waters in a criminal act to defend an illegal embargo. Even if they did, it doesn't lessen the criminal actions of the Israelis.

Not going on the American's reaction at the UN today.

Perhaps the UN should suggest my plan to the US government.

But not that they'd be murdered in international waters in a criminal act to defend an illegal embargo. .

Nobody would ever consider such a thing.
Something beyond the ken of the human mind to conceive.

An impossibility, in short. :(

I'll bet when the people on that boat saw the Israeli gunboats approaching, they said: "Wha......???!!!" Who could ever conceive of a thing like this happening??!!:eek:

Anyone getting on that ship, knowing of the plan, had to have given some thought to the consequences.
Not even Turkey - up until now, Israel's sole Muslim ally in the area - expected them to illegally attack an unarmed ship in international waters and start murdering people on-board, Johnny.

I know one of the women in the convey - a respected activist and journalist - and I'm pretty damn sure she wasn't expecting to be met by murdering Israeli soldiers in open waters either.

I'm sure they thought it might get veryn tense yes. .

I can hear them talking now.

"Well, it might get pretty tense, but the Israelis are usually pretty well behaved, so there's no fucking way that they'd murder us in international waters.

I mean, they're bad guys, but not that bad, shurely? Nah, let's just put it out of our minds!"

I think they expected it to get very tense in Israeli waters yes, sounds reasonable to me. But to be murdered in international waters? Well given no-one else the US/UK and especially the Turkish govt who sponsored it expected it, then no.

Yes, I understand. The idea is an impossibility with no chance of happening, and therefore, nobody had even an inkling of a thought that such a thing might occur.
