Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship, and beat people on board. Fatalities reported.

A woman on BBC News is saying that Israel parachuted people onto the ship . and that it is not clear who started shooting first.

Amazing. I have not been tuned into this for long, but I have already seen footage of Commandos letting themselves down a rope from a helicopter. Where did she get the idea they parachuted?

One thing this has done, is generate a huge amount of publicity. Way more than another bomb belt in an Israeli restaurant would get.

If you're prepared to spend lives in the furtherance of a cause, these lives got a real bang for the buck.

Blaming the victims of a massacre for the actions of their killers is pretty fucking low in my opinion.

It's pathetic and it's disgusting Why don't you and Sass for once, just once, just have the balls to condemn the indefensible. Because right now you "friends of Israel are all coming across as really sick bastards.

Hey Blagz: explain again why the rule of law is a crock of shit?

I could explain how international law looks from a marxist perspective and how even the UN think this action is out of order. I suspect, however, that you don't give s fuck and will go 'la la don't care, Israel is right'

How does the 'rule of law' justify (laughably incompetent) Israeli commandos boarding a Turkish ship in international waters?
He's referring to his inability to understand an argument analysing power relations in society. He thinks it's an argument he won, bless. :D

conventional international law is ambiguous about this. from the israeli perspective they are allowed to blockade anyone in the international waters who represents a geniune threat. as long as they can prove this to the un security council, they are off the hook.

from the palestinian (or the aid convoy's) perspective, they could argue that israeli forces have acted like ... forgive me for making an awful comparison the somali pirates and they tried to kill them albeit with clubs simply for the fear of their lives...

Although my broader opinion of the event hasn't changed, i.e. the deaths are fundamentally attributable to Israeli actions, having read the relevant parts of the report mentioned in the Melanie Phillips article, having checked out the provenance of that report, and also having surveyed all the information available in terms of videos of the boarding and Israeli records of their strategy, I'm a lot less sure about the cause and effect in the chain of events that led up to the Israeli shooting.

At least two things seem a bit more clear now.

Firstly, the soldiers were armed to deal with a riot-like situation and carried only holstered firearms. Therefore the idea that they opened fire upon hitting the deck lacks credibility. In fact, it appears that they were principally armed with paintball guns, which is one of the reasons why some of them were overwhelmed.

Secondly, the IHH does not exactly have a squeaky clean record and furthermore there seems to be a track record of infiltration of Islamic charities by militants. However, be that as it may, I still suspect that the reaction of the activists is more in line with lay people who are passionate about their cause rather than something more cynical.

This is a massive fuck-up by the Israeli military - an atrocity even. For instance, watching the videos, it seems possible to identify when the firing starts as when the crowd rapidly disperses, which begs the question as to why the soldiers then had to go on shooting into 9 people until they were dead.

However, the picture seems to be getting less clear rather than more.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of account the activists themselves have - not so much of the raid, I think we can pretty much see what happened from the videos already in circulation, but more so in terms of their broader impressions of the flotilla and its constituent members.

Fuck right off you loathsome fuck.... What a fucking scummy little comparison, deliberately trying to link the aid convoy with murderous pirates.
