Feminism and the silencing of women

Bump - I just wanted to share this book that I read recently by Mary Beard Women & Power - Profile Books

Women & Power’s most important contribution to the current advances and failures of feminism in the West is its encouragement of contemplation and understanding. To reflect on the silencing of women addresses urgent feminist issues of the 21st century, including the low number of cases of domestic violence, sexual harassment and assault that are reported to authorities, the opposition to the public voice of the #MeToo movement and the vileness of trolling.

Beard reminds us that women need to claim the public space and speak. To scream, yell and rewrite the script we have been assigned to deliver since the mythical age of Penelope.

And there I was about to tuck into a meal for one and tune into the latest RTD drama (it's as good as would be expected. Transhumanism, lols)

Where does one begin with discussing women being silenced? By thanking friendofdorothy for beginning this thread on my behalf. Women need to not only speak up but to also amplify the voices especially those of women who help them.

As we navigate a world that now has so many different means for every person to express and say what they feel, I believe I am right in asserting that women are more than any other group, shut down and silenced.

I have thoughts on why this is, but I am going to take my m41 out of the microwave and ask Alexa to find RTD for me, assured that this thread will be read and women especially will comment on why they think women get shut down.

Are we the granddaughters of the witches they didnt burn?
(if there's a snazzy way of adding a link, do tell, I may not have cast enough spells to know Are witches the ultimate feminists?)
completely agree, the langer is taking the piss...eh ?

It's really good. And shocking as it is, Atwood says there's nothing in it that hasn't actually happened somewhere.

(The TV series is also really good if v bleak. It was all available on All4 but not sure if it's still there.)

Ive bought the first season on iTunes. I balked a bit at buying it all at once lol. I’ll watch it with my mam! 😂

There’s been a major school of thought change then as I remember a decade (?) ago men doing exactly that would get reproached. It was sexist for men to step up as you’re reinforcing the notion of women being weak. That they need protecting by men. But now the message appears to be reversed. That we SHOULD be the ones standing up to male creepiness. What changed?

Nothing. People (aka "Women") have differing opinions. We aren't a solid block with the exact same views on everything.

@Cloo’s post is about automatically shutting down or challenging because it was made by a woman. If you think that is the same thing as stepping up to protect women then I think you’ve misunderstood.

And equally, if you don’t understand the difference between calling out male creepiness and playing the white knight, you’ve misunderstood.

Fucking hell. I don’t know if you’re just thick as pig shit or just an unreconstructed old git. Either way, I feel sorry for the women in your life.

I think as ever, there's probably context that needs to be taken into account. Maybe if you went back and looked at some of the threads where people apparently took these positions a decade ago you might be able to see what the difference is - as it is, it seems a bit silly to be waving vaguely at a dimly remembered past to make some snide point today.

I'd back my friends male or female equally. I think most people do this? None think I'm as 'thick as pigshit' I don't think. But then the real world isn't like here with its entrenched positions.

I'm trying to understand the theory, which appears to have changed. It could be explained rather than people simply getting abusive.

Stepping up to defend women’s rights is not the same thing as telling another bloke to back off and leave your female friend alone.
