Felipe Massa’s lawyers seeking compensation for 2008 F1 title loss to Lewis Hamilton

Lawyers for former Brazilian driver Felipe Massa have launched legal action against F1 bosses and the FIA over his title loss to Lewis Hamilton in 2008. As initially reported by Reuters, representatives of the former Ferrari driver are seeking substantial damages resulting from an alleged ‘conspiracy’ against Massa and his title bid 15 years ago. Massa lost out on the 2008 title to Hamilton in dramatic circumstances in Brazil.

Hamilton overtook Timo Glock on the final lap to pip Massa to the title by just one-point. Reuters noted that they had seen a letter sent from the London office of Enyo Law which read: “Simply put, Mr Massa is the rightful 2008 Driver's Champion, and F1 and FIA deliberately ignored the misconduct that cheated him out of that title. Mr Massa is unable to fully quantify his losses at this stage but estimates that they are likely to exceed tens of millions of Euros. This amount does not cover the serious moral and reputational losses suffered by Mr Massa.”

The letter was addressed to F1 boss Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem. It also stated that Massa could "pursue legal action in order to seek compensation for the harm he has suffered as well as recognition that, but for those unlawful acts, he would have been awarded the 2008 Championship.” Massa’s decision to pursue legal action comes after a startling revelation that former CEO Bernie Ecclestone that he and former FIA president Max Mosley was aware that Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed on purpose at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix as part of 'crash-gate'. Piquet’s crash cost Massa a likely win in Singapore given that the Ferrari driver was leading the race and forced into an unscheduled pit stop. During the pit stop, a fuel hose was stuck in Massa’s car and the operational error cost Massa crucial points, and ultimately the title.

[I posted last season that he was thinking about legal action, looks like he's going ahead with it]
That is a nonsense accusation. Fair enough, they should be annoyed at the alleged purposeful crash, but it's Ferrari that fucked the pit stop. Sounds a bit like sour grapes to me, but waaay after the fact.

Lewis Hamilton makes his most honest statement yet about unsigned Mercedes contract

Lewis Hamilton has offered some reassuring words to Mercedes fans in an extremely honest statement about why his new contract hasn’t been finalised yet. Hamilton’s current deal with Mercedes expires at the end of this season and, despite negotiations for an extension rumbling on for months, it still hasn’t been signed. But at the F1 Dutch Grand Prix, where Hamilton dreams of ending Red Bull’s winning streak on Max Verstappen’s home turf, he gave a blunt update over his contract talks.

“I’m staying where I am,” he said. “It just takes time. We just had this break, as well. In this break, no-one has been thinking about it. Hopefully it will be done soon.” A reporter asked: “What is missing?” Hamilton replied: “I can’t tell you. There’s always something missing.”

Sky F1’s David Croft assessed the situation: “Hamilton could retire now and live comfortably for the rest of his life, knowing he would leave this sport as one of the greatest drivers, if not the greatest driver, that we’ve ever seen. If he’s talking about staying at Mercedes, I think the belief is there. I don’t think the trust has ever disappeared, I don’t think the belief has ever disappeared, between Lewis and the team. Why would it, given what they’ve given him since 2013? Things aren’t signed but there’s no discord, no problem that’s stopping him signing. He’s not going to go anywhere else, I don’t the seats are there to give him a world championship crack. So staying at Mercedes is his No1 option because that will give him the best chance. He can’t get a seat at Red Bull because Checo Perez is staying alongside Max Verstappen. I’m glad he’s saying that he’s going to stay, because nobody who’s a fan of Formula 1 wants to see Hamilton retire just yet.”

Rumours of a big-money offer from Ferrari have been dismissed by both the Italian manufacturer and Hamilton. And reports that Hamilton's demand for a 10-year post-racing role was scuppering a new agreement have previously been rejected by Toto Wolff.

Ricciardo taken to hospital for checks on hand

AlphaTauri driver Daniel Ricciardo has been taken to hospital for further checks after an accident during second practice for Formula 1’s Dutch Grand Prix. Ricciardo went off at the banked Turn 3 at Zandvoort moments after compatriot Oscar Piastri crashed further up the same corner. The damage to Ricciardo’s AT04 was relatively minor but the Australian immediately radioed AlphaTauri to suggest he had hurt his hand.

Ricciardo extricated himself from the car and pointed to his left hand as an issue when conversing with marshals. The FIA confirmed that Ricciardo has gone to hospital for further checks. In the event of Ricciardo being ruled out of the remainder of the event AlphaTauri has Liam Lawson on standby as its reserve driver. It is understood that Nyck de Vries, who was replaced by Ricciardo prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix, remains under contract with AlphaTauri’s parent organisation Red Bull.

Drivers can be replaced at any time up until the start of qualifying per Formula 1 regulations.

Haas Confirm Magnussen and Hülkenberg for 2024

Haas F1 Team have confirmed that both Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg will remain with the team for the 2024 season. The contracts for both drivers were due to expire at the end of the season, and whilst the future of Hülkenberg looked nailed on after some impressive performances, many wondered if Magnussen would be offered an extension. Haas have kept faith in both drivers and shown loyalty by sticking with the pair for the 2024 season, especially with so many young drivers waiting for an opportunity.

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner said: “I think it’s safe to say that we’ve had an extremely solid driver pairing this season in Formula 1 and ultimately there was no reason to look to change that moving forward.” Magnussen returned to Haas in 2022, following Nikita Mazepin leaving the team just a few weeks before the season opener in Bahrain. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster 18 months for the Dane, with the highlight being a first career pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Magnussen said: “I’m obviously very happy to see my relationship with Haas extended once again. My return in 2022 had been unexpected but was filled with numerous highlights, and although this season hasn’t gone quite as we’d hoped, we’ve still managed to get into the points and shown potential in the package we have.
There’s plenty of racing remaining in 2023 and we’ve got a lot of work to do to continue to understand the VF-23 – that learning can be applied into the 2024 car. My thanks, as always, go to Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner for giving me the opportunity to keep racing in the sport I love.”

Steiner added: “Magnussen is obviously a very well-known quantity to us, and I’m delighted he’ll return for what will be his seventh season in Haas colours. With 113 starts for our team alone, we know where his strengths lie and his knowledge and experience of our organization pairs very well with that too`.

Hülkenberg made his return to F1 at the start of the season with Haas after three years out of the sport. Since returning, his performances have been impressive, especially in qualifying with a front-row spot – although he was later demoted three places for impeding – in Canada and multiple Q3 appearances.

Hulkenberg was delighted with the news and hopes for more success in 2024: “It’s nice to get things sorted early for next season to just keep the focus on racing and improving performance. I enjoy being part of the team and share Gene and Guenther’s passion for it. We’re competing in a very tight midfield and I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve done together so far and taking that forward into 2024.”

Steiner continued: “Nico’s simply slotted in without fuss or fanfare and proved himself to be a valuable member of the team. He’s approaching 200 starts in Formula 1 and we’re very happy to be the beneficiary of that experience behind the wheel.”

Anthem watch:

The usual royalist dirge.

Classical musicians making the best of the cold and wind. Nice frocks.

Conducted by a strange fiddler in dire need of a haircut.

The quarter of a million members of the Orange Order in attendance probably liked it.

Tune: 1/10. Performance: 4/10.
