Verstappen takes pole in wet qualifying

Qualifying for tomorrow's Sprint Race at Emilia Romagna was a very interrupted affair due to mistakes and technical issues for various drivers. Verstappen ended up on top, sealing pole position ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. On the back of a damp practice session in the morning, the track ended up virtually dry for qualifying, even though off-line there continued to be wet patches. Nobody seemed to be too bothered though with no off-track excursions seen during the first minutes. The times did however gradually improve as qualifying went on.

Progress was suddenly interrupted when the right rear brake of Albon's Williams caught fire during his first flying lap. Albon went wide and then slowed down to try to get the car back to the pits, but that didn't stop the brake disc from exploding a few corners later. The blow left burning debris on the track and forced a red flag to allow for some cleaning. WIth 10 minutes left on the clock, the track was rapidly extremely busy once the session got going again. Vettel, then Stroll, then Alonso were the first to shoot to the top of the timesheet, only to be later completely surpassed by the Ferrari duo as both distanced the competition to about 8 tenths.

All drivers continued for several laps on the same set of soft tyres, resulting in constantly improving times with both Ferraris consistently at the top of the board. The improving track conditions forced everybody to stay out and try to keep on improving. Tumbling times saw both Mercedes only save themselves in the dying seconds while Ocon, who returned to the pits several minutes before the end with a mechanical issue finished 19th, ahead only of Albon who could not set a time.

Q2 kicked off with everybody immediately going out as rain was coming, leaving room for just a single timed lap in the best conditions. Sainz was one of the first ones in track and he was on it straight away, his time only beaten Verstappen. The Spaniard continued quickly the next lap until he crashed out in Turn 18. He spun and hit the barriers sideways, enough to break the front suspension and red flag the session. A disaster for Sainz as he looked fit for a proper go at pole position. During the stoppage, Norris sat third, followed by Perez, Leclerc and Alonso. Rain arrived a minute later, basically locking in the positions as they were and eliminating Russell, Schumacher, Hamilton, Zhou and Stroll.

When the final part of qualifying kicked off, rain had stopped but it had become too wet to use dry weather tyres. Though Leclerc said "the track is dryer than I thought", Verstappen ended up going through a bit gravel after being too courageous on the throttle on his warm-up lap. When everybody was well in their first flying laps, Magnussen put a wheel on the white line and spun off through the gravel. As the Dane seemed stuck, the session was stopped again, only to see Magnussen get his undamaged car going again, making his was back to the pits.

Just like at the start of Q3, Fernando Alonso was the first to take to the track. The Spaniard made the same error as Magnussen when he crashed out minutes earlier, but the Alpine driver managed to keep it on the track. Both McLarens were well on it and ended up 3rd and 4th when Leclerc and Verstappen went top. Magnussen then improved to third and Alonso to fourth until Bottas parked his Alfa Romeo before Turn 17 with an apparent technical problem. Verstappen interestingly lifted when passing Bottas but still massively improved on his previous lap to go 0.7s faster than Leclerc. Moments after Verstappen crossed the line, the session was red-flagged yet again, leaving 2 minutes and 58 seconds.

The session got restarted another 10 minutes later with Verstappen out first, followed by Leclerc. Before they were halfway, Norris ended up stuck in the gravel exactly where Magnussen went off before. With just 38 seconds left, that was the end of a very disrupted session. Verstappen and Leclerc on the front row is therefore the stage for Saturday's sprint race that will decide the grid for Sunday.

All this talk of a Mercedes racecar porpoising reminds me of when they brought a car to Le Mans which thought it was an airplane. The have a bit of a record where aerodynamics haven't been in their favour.

[just teasing]

George Russell Heads Final Practice

George Russell was perhaps the surprise pacesetter in second practice for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Saturday morning as the teams used the dry conditions at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team endured a tough Friday at Imola, with both Russell and team-mate Lewis Hamilton failing to get into Q3 during Qualifying, the first time since the Japanese Grand Prix of 2012 that the team failed to get a single driver into the top ten shootout. But the W13 appeared to be a much better car in the longer runs, with Russell taking the top spot with a time of 1:19.457, 0.081 seconds ahead of Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Pérez.

However, Pérez’s best time was set on the medium Pirelli compound compared to the soft run of Russell, meaning Mercedes might not be as strong as they appeared to be during the session. Charles Leclerc, who will start on the front row for Saturday’s Sprint race. was third quickest for Scuderia Ferrari in front of their beloved Tifosi, while Hamilton was fourth in the second Mercedes, ahead of the leading BWT Alpine F1 Team driver, Fernando Alonso. Carlos Sainz Jr., who will have work to do from tenth on the grid after crashing during Qualifying on Friday, was sixth in the second Ferrari, just ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the Dutchman appearing to not be as confident around Imola as team-mate Pérez was across the session. After being eliminated in Q1 on Friday, both Scuderia AlphaTauri drivers placed inside the top ten on Saturday morning, with Yuki Tsunoda again having the edge on Pierre Gasly as they finished eighth and ninth. Zhou Guanyu completed the top ten for Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN as team-mate Valtteri Bottas sat out the session with more mechanical issues.

Another driver to miss out on running was McLaren F1 Team’s Daniel Ricciardo, with the team removing his power unit as they investigated a problem. His team-mate Lando Norris also missed a chunk of the session due to a braking issue that left him the slowest of the eighteen drivers who set a lap time. Alexander Albon, who will start the Sprint race last on the grid following his brake issue during Qualifying, was as high as second at one point during the session for Williams Racing, but the Thai driver dropped to eleventh by the end, just ahead of Haas F1 Team duo Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher. It was another disappointing session for the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 Team as Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel ended fourteenth and fifteenth, ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Williams’ Nicholas Latifi and McLaren’s Norris. The next track action for the teams will be first Sprint race of the season, with Verstappen starting on pole position ahead of Leclerc. Some drivers will go into the race with more confidence than others, with the likes of Norris, Ricciardo and Norris on the back foot after very limited dry weather running across the weekend.

Aston Martin and Williams interested in Porsche or Audi alliance

Mercedes-powered Aston Martin and Williams expressed an interest in joining forces with Audi should the Volkswagen Group-owned brand decide to enter Formula 1 from 2026. Volkswagen said this month that it was open to entering F1 with Porsche and Audi but did not say how it planned to do so. Audi have been linked to McLaren while Porsche could partner Red Bull, the team of world champion Max Verstappen, while Aston Martin and Williams have also been mentioned in media speculation. “I think for any team who has not a manufacturer on his side it’s super-appealing to have this possibility,” Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack told reporters on Saturday at Imola when asked about Audi and Porsche. “We would be lying if we say we are not interested in something like that. I would be very interested to talk.”

Williams team principal Jost Capito, a previous head of Volkswagen Motorsport, said the same would apply to his outfit if the German carmaker’s board decided to take the plunge. The storied Grove-based team started by Sir Frank Williams has a history packed with strategic alliances with the likes of Renault and Honda that saw them through their golden era. Earlier this year the annual round of “Volkswagen-to-F1 stories” did the rounds, normally followed by denials. But this time around it got serious when the German auto giant made favourable soundbites about a programme or two, hinting at an announcement this April, but that’s on ice it appears. While there are no denials that the deals have hit snags, there has also been an absence of clear and believable information about where things stand now with Volkswagen and their plans.

However there is a school of thought that F1 would be better served if Porsche and/or Audi entered the sport as a works team rather than partner with an existing outfit; they have the resources, know-how and pedigree to start a project from scratch.

Alfa Romeo changes Bottas' chassis after Q3 damage

Valtteri Bottas sat out Saturday's FP2 session as his Alfa Romeo crews undertook to build up a spare chassis for the Finn in time for this afternoon's Sprint race at Imola. On Friday, Bottas had been ordered to park his car at the start of Q3 after Alfa's telemetry had registered excessive temperatures due to a broken exhaust. Further inspection revealed damage to the C42's wiring loom at the rear as well as to several components. The team decided that it would be easier to replace the chassis than to replace the very complex wiring.

However, the Hinwil squad's crews could only begin their work on Saturday morning as F1's parc fermé rules precluded the team from undertaking repairs on Friday. Unfortunately, the work could not be completed in time for today's final practice session. “We had an issue on the exhaust,” explained team boss Fred Vasseur “And then it burned all the components around it, including the loom, and including the casing of the gearbox. The loom is going inside the chassis, and it's easier to change it. We expected yesterday to have to do it, but the car is sealed. Either you break the seals and you start from the pitlane, or you wait for this morning and you risk FP2. We hoped to make it, but we were too optimistic. The fact that we missed FP2, this is a shame. For sure, it would have been better to do the session, or we would always stay in the garage for FP2!”

Vasseur will head into the Sprint event with no Saturday mileage, but the Finn will rely on the data collected by teammate Guanyu Zhou who enjoyed a solid FP1 session. “I trust him on the fact that the adaptation will be quite quick, and he will have a look at the data from Zhou, and have a good understanding," added Vasseur. "And he did some laps also yesterday on the almost dry conditions. So I’m not worried.”

still not to sold on the sprint formula

its just a bit meh :hmm:
It‘s a tasty little morsel of racing which may improve the main GP by mixing up the grid due to a crash during the sprint, or may mess up the main GP by stealing from it all the overtakes which would have made it a classic. Jury is still out!

Thank god Verstappen closed up and passed close to the end, because without that it was tailing off a bit. Should make tomorrow better too as LeCluck will have to get past again, which he likely will.

Nico Who? still butting in online.

Like a turd on a fluffy towel.

I presume there wasn't enough room at Imola for his ego, not with Max in attendance.
