F1 2016

Not an auspicious start to the weekend for Hammy.

I doubt it will do him much harm - his starts so far have been shocking.

Besides, his last five starts outside the top five have led to decent results (nicked from the Sky F1 page):

2014 Hungarian GP: started 22nd - finished 3rd

2014 German GP: started 20th - finished 3rd

2014 British GP: started 6th - finished 1st

2014 Austrian GP: started 9th - 2nd

Oddschecker is still showing Hammy at about evens for pole position. I wonder if they've heard... Rosberg on pole might be a decent punt at 7/4.

Weather forecast for Saturday looks like rain in Shanghai but dry for the race, Alonso fit to drive. BRDC have given the thumbs up to the deal for Jaguar/Land Rover to buy Silverstone.

Lewis can still get pole position, getting pole doesn't mean starting the race in first place, it means getting the fastest time in Qualifying, any penalty's are applied after qualifying has finished.

For betting I think you'll find bookies pay out based on the official times listed by the FIA, Grid position penalties/subsequent disqualifications do not apply for settlement purposes unless the FIA have applied "qualifying time penalties" prior to qualifying starting (which they can do but rarely ever seem to, for example: if the car is under weight they may add a time penalty to the qualifying time plus a grid place penalty).

Edit to add, I'm not trying to teach you about sucking eggs, I'd just hate to see you have a bet on him not getting pole because of the grid penalty ;)

Hammy keeps locking up and spinning into turn 11.

Twice now in the same spot.

Mercedes are now pulling the front of his car apart.

Massa has a rear left puncture. It seemed to be a problem with the floor pan. Session red-flagged.

Massa goes out again. Another left rear gets shredded. It IS the floor pan.

Immediately after, K Mag crawls in with a deflated left rear... :hmm:

Session red-flagged again.

ETA: K MAg had a suspension failure.

I know this has been done before, what is a good link for streaming these days? Might tune in for some :)
I think 1%er has recommended a stream or two earlier on.

(I'm streaming Sky F1, so I don't know much apart from that.)

Only 7 minutes left FP1.

It seems now the problem was within Massa's wheel rim itself. Not the tyre.

It's a worry for Williams that two failed one after another.

Attention, all petrolheads.

The one essential point to look out for:

Danny Ricciardo's new haircut.

That is all.

:)

Werlein's head-rest is flapping loose.

Gutierrez's brakes ignited and had to be extinguished in the pits.

(Plus Massa has two rim failures.)

Some strange mechanical failures so far in China.

ETA: the Williams problem was "rim clearance".

:hmm:

Try one of those above, it can be a pain in the arse closing the adverts but once you've done that you will not get pop-ups or ads, don't download anything you don't need to and if you can't close any ads just go full screen.

Could Nico start drivers roundabout
Nico Rosberg is about to sign a new contract with Mercedes it seems, it will be interesting to hear later how much the contract is for, Lewis is on around £30 million a year, I can't see Toto paying Rosberg that sort of money. He is currently on around £14 million a year (iirc), his new contract could start the beginning of the drivers roundabout, as a number of drivers contracts finish this season with drivers also retiring. There should be seats at Ferrari and McLaren up for grabs with Kimi and Jenson possibly on their way to becoming commentators, also Bottas and Massa at Williams out of contract (albeit they may have options). Will Toro Rosso be able to keep hold of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz I think it is likely that one of them will be promoted to Red Bull if Daniil Kvyat doesn't get his finger out. Both Ferrari and Mercedes have spoken about Verstappen as a future driver for their teams, but if they resign Nico Mercedes will have drivers under contract for the next couple of years and Ferrari could well make a bid for Verstappen having a 4 times world champion in their other car. Both Renault drivers Magnussen and Palmer only have one year contracts I believe, so they could be free at the end of the season.

What now for Vijay Mallya
India's Ministry of External Affairs has suspended his diplomatic passport for 4 weeks as he has failed to attend court hearings in the country. Mallya has a diplomatic passport as he is a member of parliament in India. The businessman has been given a week to justify why his passport should not be impounded. "If he fails to respond within the stipulated time, it will be assumed that he has no response to offer and the [ministry] will go ahead with the revocation," it said. A revocation of his diplomatic passport would also affect his regular international travel documents, India's PTI news agency reports. It also claims this could pave the way for his deportation from the UK.

Gary Brabham (Son of Jack) get very light sentence
I don't usually post non formula 1 stories here but this is just shocking. Gary Brabham (55) is to serve only six months in prison after being found guilty of the rape and indecent treatment of a young girl. The formula Ford and Formula 3 driver in Europe, he made an attempt at Formula One racing in 1990, but failed to qualify for the first two races of the season and quit. He was convicted at Brisbane's District Court last month after pleading not guilty to the charges involving a child under 12. Australian Associated Press said the 55-year-old was sentenced today to 18 months in prison, to be suspended after only six months. During the trial, prosecutors alleged the offences took place between 2003 and 2007 when the girl was aged between six and 10. That sentence seems very light to me for the rape of a girl aged between 6 to 10 years old, it seems light for any kind of rape in fact.

Well, the weather forecast was right.

Rain in China.

This week qualifying will be decided by Rock, Paper , Scissors and a game of Spoof.

:)

Supine There is an advert on the VIPBOX link that says you need to log/sign in, you don't so don't click on it. You close it by clicking on the little blue spot which may move when you put you arrow over it.

Hammy went out on intermediates. Everyone else out on slicks.

Wehrlein opens his DRS on the main straight. Hits the bump.

Q1 red flagged.

Mercedes still working on Hammy's engine.

10 minutes left.

Tense.

ETA: Hammy out. Last place on the grid.

How the fuck did that truck get on the track-side, where are the marshals and race control

Lewis starting from the Pitts maybe

Looks like gods of good fortune smile on Rosberg this season.

It seems it was part of the hybrid system on Hammy's car. Ironically, Sky did a feature before qualifying about Mercedes' technical superiority, specifically mentioning the hybrid system.

Another example of the commentator's curse.

:)

If they can't fix it and have to change something he'll have to start from the pitlane, lets just hope they can sort it with software or a pitlane start will cost him a few more seconds
