F1 2016

It's probably for the benefit of occasional F1 viewers, who don't know the ins and outs of contracts and team politics.

Most regular fans heard about the 'sabbatical' arrangement and thought: "That's a bit daft. He's finished."

And so to the final GP of the season. Championship decider.

Abu Dhabi

UK times:

Fri 25 Nov
FP1 09.00
FP2 13.00

Sat 26 Nov
FP3 10.00
Qual 13.00

Sun 27 Nov
Race 13.00
The best race time for me here, late breakfast watch F1 and very long liquid lunch at a local bar, just right for last race of the season :)

No Brazilian driver or race :hmm:
With report that the Brazilian GP could be off the calendar due to lack of funding, Massa retiring and it now looks like Nasr has lost his Banco do Brazil sponsorship F1 could well loose millions more viewers as no Brazilian driver or race would mean many Brazilians will just loose interest in the sport. While there is still a chance that Nasr could get a seat it would be with Manor (but without sponsorship there is little chance). I believe as Sauber need a pay driver and I think Wehrlein will now get that seat. This is not good news for F1 or Brazil

Martin Brundle takes over benevolent fund
The GP Mechanics Trust founded and run by Sir Jackie Stewart will now be run by Martin Brundle. The trust started 30 years ago by Jackie was set up to help F1 staff who have fallen on hard times or suffer mental health or medical crisis after they have left, or after a team collapses. Soon to be renamed the Grand Prix Trust it has helped many people over the last 30 years and has now expended to help many other people involved in the sport not just Mechanics.

Manor up for sale again
There are rumors doing the rounds that Manor F1 is up for sale again, the problem for Stephen Fitzpatrick the owner is that Sauber overtook Manor in the constructors championship in Brazil and Manor need to get 2 points more than Sauber in Abu Dhabi or it will cost them $11 million for this years prize money and as much as $27 million next year. The rumors are claiming that Fitzpatrick wants twice as much as is being offered for the team, maybe if Manor can get 2 points more than Sauber in the last race he could get what he is asking but if not there is little chance.

Good morning everyone and welcome to the last qualifying of 2016

Can I request that if anyone is going to start an F1 2017 thread they put the calendar, team and driver line-up in the first post for ease of reference. If no-one starts one I'll do it next week

What tactics would you use for this race if you were Lewis?
I think if I qualified on pole I'd try and push Nico back into the pack so other cars had a chance to over take.
If I qualified in 2nd place I think I would put pressure on him without overtaking in an effort to force him into a mistake.

An interesting exchange during Nico and Lewis press conference

Nico, on Sunday evening, the season will be over but let’s come to the beginning of the season, but don’t worry, I’m not going through the whole season. But at the beginning five mechanics from Lewis’s team and five from your team left the team for Lewis. What was your impression of this change? Was it, at the end, a good idea during the season? What were your thoughts concerning this change? Were you surprised? Obviously you were not a fan of this change and who had this idea?
LH: That’s a very good question. And I would also just like to add to it, what was the explanation given to you?[Lewis asked Nico]

NR: So the easiest way to answer that is if we look at the recent team spirit within the team because you know we’ve been fighting now for three years and within the team they’ve been fighting for the race wins and for the championship so it’s quite natural that a little separation can happen between the two sides of the garage and for the overall team performance that’s not a good thing because for the overall team performance you’d want to have great team spirit, everybody fighting for one direction, everybody holding together and that’s why the decision was taken to rotate a little bit and I think it’s shown this year that it’s been a very very good thing to do because our team spirit has been as good as ever, we’ve seen that recently and we’ve had some great parties together and whatever. Everybody’s just sticking together and it’s an awesome feeling within the team so it looks like that it was the right thing to do, even though initially it’s not something that’s super comfortable because my mechanics are close to me and it feels good and everything; to then change takes a little bit of time to gel as Lewis touched on before but I understand that from a team’s perspective that was the right thing to do and it’s worked well.

LH: You’ll have to buy my book down the line in ten years time when I tell you exactly what happened. It will be an interested read.

I wonder if Lewis was stirring it with Nico?

The implication is that if it wasn't done for team unanimity, there was a performance or political reason.

Promotion for Nico's mechanics to the champion's side of the garage? Punishment for his people? Nico needing a leg-up, so he got the winning mechanics?

Hammy sets his stall out in Q1.

Over a second faster than Nico.

He'll be pleased to see Ferraris and a Red Bull ahead of Nico.

So the first tyre stops could be interesting as red bull are starting on super-soft and Mercedes will be on ultra-soft, so in theory red bull should be able to run longer before having to change tyres, will they get the undercut?

Will Lewis be able to push Nico back into the pack to give the red bulls a chance to pass him in the pits?

Lewis needs two cars between him and Nico and to finish first, Lewis has some influence on the outcome but not much, it is all down to how well the red bulls and Ferrari's can do.

Good morning all, today is the day we will find out who will win the drivers world championship. Clearly Nico is the front runner but what tactics can Lewis exploit to make it difficult?

Lewis is in poll position so can dictate the race pace as long as he makes a good start and goes into the first corner in front, it is pointless him just driving off into the distance as he usually would, that would mean Nico just has to stay ahead of the Red Bulls and Ferrari's. Sector 3 is the slowest part of the track and also the hardest place to overtake, so I would expect to see Lewis taking it easy in that sector to give other cars the chance to catch Nico, the Red Bulls are starting on super-soft tyres so should be able to run much longer than the Mercedes starting on ultra-soft, so I would expect Lewis to keep the pace as slow as possible until the first pit-stops giving the Red Bulls a chance of exploiting the undercut.

A Safety car depending on when it happens could also help Lewis, if there was a safety car at the right time it could also mean the Red Bulls or Ferrari's could in effect get a free pit-stop, but this would be all down to luck rather than tactics. If other cars get between Lewis and Nico it will be good news as Nico isn't the best at overtaking and this track makes it very hard, it also opens up the possibility of him getting some form of penalty or being involved in an accident, he has had one of the fastest cars so hasn't needed to do much overtaking and when he has had too he has had problems. He span in Canada and got a penalty in Germany trying to over take Max and was penalized in Malaysia for hitting Kimi when trying to over take.

So I think the thing to watch for is the start of the race and then Lewis's speed prior to the first pit-stop, that will tell us if Lewis is going to hold Nico up all other options will rely on luck, reliability, weather :hmm: and safety car.

Out of interest the team are not really in a position to help Nico much, as they can't call him in for an early stop as that would/could put to many cars between him and Lewis and the team has said for the whole season that the driver who gets poll gets first shot at the pit-stop. The team could help Nico with the undercut if they bring him in first and Lewis has a "slow stop":mad::mad:

It is hope over expectation but I do want Lewis to win and he has some control over things if he wants to.

Looking forward to this.

Brundle said on Sky that he reckoned Toto and co have said to Lewis that if he backs Nico into the pack, they'll pit Nico and let him have a go at an undercut.

Damon Hill was asked, in not so many words, if Nico shouldn't just take Lewis (and possibly himself) out as Schumacher did to him (in 94?). He said he didn't think Nico was that big a bastard (ion not so many words).

Yes, I expect to hear Nico moaning on the radio about Lewis holding him up from Lap one :)

The team need to be careful they don't bring Nico in and he comes out behind Red Bulls and Ferrari's as they may well hold him up as well, this track isn't an east track to overtake :)

Toto said they'd briefed the drivers about sporting racing, but when the visors go down, the red mist rises, and anything can happen.
It isn't about racing now though it is about winning and Lewis has the right to do whatever he needs to within the rules to ensure he wins the championship.

I'm sure that's what Toto meant, too.

He said he hoped the result wouldn't be decided by a mechanical problem, which is fair enough.

I'll be really pissed off if the Mercedes team interferes in this race, they have won their championship, Lewis has got poll and has the right to dictate the pace. I have a feeling that Max will play some part in the outcome

I'm nervous for some reason, I explain that while it is only 9;30 here it is passed 12;30 in Abu Dhabi so I should be able to have a beer, but the boss hasn't brought that :)

so anyways is F1 sky only next year :hmm:
Not sure about the UK but it will be free via the internet and if you don't want to watch sky even on the internet you should be able to find a link from Australia or some other English speaking country :)

I can watch it free on Brazilian TV but I feel I have a duty to steal it from sky so have in on the computer as well :)

well Lauder more or just said it Hamilton has been told not to back up Nico

nothing fishy about that at all

I'm not sure Mercedes have a lot of options with Red Bull on super-soft tyres they could stay out for much longer than Mercedes.
Fuck Toto and Lauder Lewis has already helped Mercedes with their constructors championship, it is his responsibility to do whats needed to win the drivers championship.
