F1 2016

Ron Dennis booted out of McLaren.

He's been there since God was in short trousers.

Ron Dennis: McLaren boss ends his 35-year tenure
Sky are reporting that Zak Brown has been offered Ron's job but this has not been confirmed by McLaren or Brown (this news is only 1 hour old so maybe they don't want to say anything until a decision has been made by both parties).

So what now for McLaren? The usual suspects have been named in the press, Ross Brawn, Zak Brown and James Allison as likely people to take over, but I'm not sure it is that simple. Jost Capito who joined the team last summer as CEO of McLaren racing from Volkswagen could step up to Rons old job, but he was brought in by Ron so maybe he will also be going, time will tell. What about Eric Boullier, there were rumors earlier this year that Eric could be moving to Ferrari, clearly Ferrari need to make changes at the top of the team and the pool of people available or able is very small.

Lets look at each named person and what they have said recently;

Ross Brawn said in a very long and insightful interview on Sky over the weekend that "it is very unlikely that I will ever get involved with a team again......... I don't really see myself getting involved with a team again" but indicated that he would be interested in a job "overseeing" the sport. It must be remembered that he gave that interview before the news of Ron Dennis's departure from McLaren. He has experience of running a team and being the big boss, he also has good links with Honda where he was team principal for the season 2008 just before Honda pulled-out of F1, he then went on to own Brawn F1 which he brought from Honda. Honda have invested millions in F1 over the last couple of years and I'm sure they would be pushing for someone like Brawn with his pedigree at the top of McLaren. As Ross said himself "never say never"

Zak Brown an ex-racing driver and very successful businessman in the sports marketing world with close ties to F1. He also has close ties to McLaren racing as he drove a McLaren for a number of years in the GT series. He recently stepped down from his job as CEO of his very successful marketing and entertainment group (CSM sports marketing) but it was reported that he did so to take on a leading roll with Liberty Media to develop and grow Formula one. It has been reported by Sky news in the last hour that he has been given a "firm offer" to succeed Ron Dennis as CEO of McLaren.

James Allison, would he want the job of team principle and CEO or just sporting director, I'm not sure he is really the man for the job at this time but I could see him going to McLaren in some capacity, I just think CEO is not where he would want to be.

Jost Capito is an option, he is CEO of McLaren racing but he is also "Ron's man" having been brought into the team by Dennis a few months ago, clearly he could do the job but would the board want him?

Eric Boullier like Allison is an engineer and while he is currently racing direct of McLaren I'm not sure he would want the job of CEO of the McLaren group, it would take him away from the front-line of racing as he would have so many other areas to be looking after.

But if Zak Brown really has been offered the job and turns it down, all the others could still be in the frame.

I got the impression from the Ross Brawn interview that he'd be keen to work in F1 for the new owners, either as an employee or as a consultant, helping them navigate the tempestuous waters in the Straits of Ecclestone.

I can't see him wanting to run a team again. Been there, done that, got the constructor's championship T-shirt.

Zac Brown might be a good choice, and I can see how he'd fit with Eric B.

Yes I agree, I think Ross would like to be back in F1 and I'm sure he would rather be working for the owners than a team nowadays, he would have far more influence and much less stress.

I'm not sure Zak would want the job of CEO of McLaren he was the CEO of one of the biggest sports marketing companies in the world and I think it would be step down for him, I thought Liberty Media were lining him up for Bernie's job as the top man in F1, would he turn that down for a job with a team albeit a CEO post?

interesting times and how lucky to be offered two top jobs with-in F1, I'd take the job as CEO for Liberty Media's F1 company everyday over CEO at McLaren :)

Braun - did race > dont race.
Brawn F1 must be one of the most successful Formula One teams in history on percentage terms.
They raced for one season and took place in 17 GPs of which they won 8, had 15 podiums, 5 poll positions and 4 fastest laps, they also won both the drivers and construction championships that year.

At the end of their only season they were brought by Mercedes because as part of the deal to supply engines to the team, Mercedes had an option to buy into the team and brought 75% of the shares for around £110m

The Americans are coming
Well it didn't take long for Liberty Media to decide it wants more races on the calendar, not only do the want a night race in Las Vegas they also want races in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. The idea of a race in Las Vegas isn't new, it has been muted a few times over the years, iirc the biggest stumbling block in the past has been that the casinos don't want it because it will not make them money and could cost them millions in lost revenue over the race weekend. The teams say that 21 races is pushing it for them, so will we see more races or current races dropped from the current calendar. I'm sure that the contract between FOM, the FIA and TV companies says that a certain percentage of races must be held in Europe and that is why the race in Buka is called the European Grand Prix and not the Azerbaijan Grand Prix (from memory I think 40% of races must be held in Europe under the current contacts)

The news that Williams has been sold can't be true (yet)

On the news today I heard that Williams F1 has been sold, but that can't be the case as Williams Grand Prix Engineering Ltd is a listed company so there would have had to be an official announcement. It was reported a few weeks ago that Lawrence Stroll, the father of Lance who will be driving for Williams next season has invested $80 million to get his son a drive, if that is the case no deal to buy the team has been done yet as it is listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange. While Sir Frank and Patrick Head hold around 60% of the shares (Toto Wolff held some shares in the company but iirc he has sold them or agreed to sell them) and the company accounts value it at around $142 million. Frank Williams did sell the company once before back in the mid 70's but it didn't work out and he started again with Patrick Head after a year or two.

Clearly if Lawrence Stroll has invested $80 million it isn't just so his son car drive a racing car, so maybe there will be some real news about what is going on soon.

6 drivers and only 4 seats

So as we approach the final race in Abu Dhabi we have Sauber and Manor with 4 seats available and Felipe Nasr, Marcus Ericsson, Pascal Wehrlein, Esteban Gutierrez, Rio Haryanto and Jordan King all looking for seats. If reports are true both the current Sauber drivers were both looking to jump ship, will the team hold this against them? They both have a lot of money behind them to bring to a team so I would expect to see them both in F1 next season. Of the two I believe Ericsson has the better chance of staying with Sauber as not only does he have a similar amount of sponsorship he also has ties to Longbow who brought a stake in Sauber earlier in the season. There are rumors around Nasr's sponsorship from Banco do Brasil as the current financial situation in Brazil is not good and many companies are cutting back on their sponsorship of sports. Gutierrez is in the picture, he raced for Sauber for two years but when he left he had some uncomplimentary things to say about the team.

With Sauber having a new partner in Longbow and also highly lightly to now finish above Manor in the constructors championship (worth as much as 30 million dollars depending on the figures you choose to believe), driver money may not be as important to them as it will be to Manor. Sauber have already announced that they will be running a 2016 spec Ferrari power-unit next season and see it as a development year with all the new regulations, so are already playing down expectations.

So what about Manor, next year they will be using the 2017 spec Mercedes power-unit, so from a drivers point of view they will be a better bet than Sauber, but the team has a lack of money and will for sure need to bring in two drivers with lots of sponsorship money. Clearly now that Ocon is moving to Force India, Wehrlein who is also linked with Mercedes may well do a deal with Manor to keep him at the team for a reduced power-unit cost. He has been okay for the team (he actually scored points for the team finishing 10th in Austria, only the 2nd time Manor have scored points) but hasn't been a standout from Haryanto or Ocon this season. Haryanto is back in contention now that the Indonesian Government seem to have sorted-out his sponsorship and Jordon King (Manor’s development driver) is also in the frame as he would bring money to the team.

Max up again for "action of the year" award
Max's pass on Rosberg at the Brazilian GP has been picked as F1's choice for the Action of the year award. Where 8 FIA series nominate their most entertaining action of the season. Max has won this award for the last two years, last year for his daring move around the outside of Sauber’s Felipe Nasr at Spa-Francorchamps’ fearsome Blanchimont corner during the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix. The year before he won it for a spectacular last-lap pass of current GP2 championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi in a European F3 race at Imola. In 2015 he also won the F1 personality of the year as well as Rookie of the year, the first time anyone had claimed more than one of the non-championship related awards in the same season.

If you want to vote and have a chance of winning 2 paddock passes for next years Silverstone GP weekend click here and good luck to you :)

Zak Brown to take McLaren roll
There are reports claiming that Zak Brown has accepted a "senior roll" at McLaren, There is no official statement as yet ( that I can find). Ron Dennis remains chairman and CEO until January I believe but he could walk away before then.

Marcus Ericsson to stay with Sauber
It has been reported by Marcus Ericsson's management that he will be retained by Sauber for 2017. Reports in the Brazilian press over the weekend also confirmed what has been posted above that Felipe Nasr is having some problems with his major sponsor Banco do Brasil, so we will have to wait and see what happens with his drive. Media reports are claiming that the new chairman of Banco do Brasil wants to look at all currant sponsorship's.

Malaysia GP not renewing contract

Due to economic problems the race will end when current contract expires in two years according to Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz.
"We spend 300 million ringgit ($67 million) per year but are not getting 300 million back, there are no returns on the F1 Grand Prix." Nazri told state-run Bernama news agency. He noted that attendance had declined despite the high cost of staging the race, which has been held at the Sepang circuit near Kuala Lumpur since 1999.

I guess adding more races in the region have meant that number are down, this could be a problem in other regions as it was reported that the number of Mexicans who went to the US GP were down as there is now a race in Mexico.
