F1 2016

I'm not sure about this new system, but I'll reserve judgement for a couple of races and see if new graphics come along and make it easier to follow

Nice comment from Brundle:

"Lewis has spent the winter on the red carpet and fashion shows. Nico's been changing nappies and pondering coming second to Lewis. It comes to the first race, and Lewis cruises to the front."

I think there'll be some changes as teams don't have time to turn the cars around for a second flying lap unless they are in the top 4

They can't just fuel the cars up and keep them out in Q2 as they have to start the race on their q2 tyres

It was a curiosity. Not so good at shaking up the field and making the spectacle for the fans.

It front-loaded the sessions - it was a problem before when they sat in the garage until the last minute and shot out. But now the faster cars get a decent lap in and call it a day and let the clock run out. So no action. The middle order cars don't have enough time to react to the times being set.

It'll get changed.

Qualifying wasn't broken so I'm not sure why they changed it, Toto said it was the promoters who pushed for change and I'm surprised the teams didn't see it wouldn't really work.

I think Martin and Niki are right, I think what they are saying in a coded way is, you can't run F1 by committee and the teams need to concentrate on racing, the FIA need to make the rules and Bernie and FOM need to run the show and business, like it was "in the good old days".

Lots of chat on Sky. None in favour. As you say, it wasn't broken. They'll go back to the old system for the next race.

I remember the good old days when qualifying was simple. There was one hour, they drove as fast as they could, a little strategy thrown in for good measure. Simple and easy to follow.

Q3 basically over with still three and a half minutes to go.....

The big problem was that was that you'd get 45 minutes of nothing happening, with the cars sat in the garage, and then them only going out in the last 15 minutes, which is why it was changed. The single lap shoot out that replaced it was just boring, but the format we've had for the past few seasons has really worked (after a few tweaks). Not sure why the need to change it.

New qualifying could be scraped by Bahrain race
The main problem appears to be teams are worried about tyre usage and the time it takes to refuel and change tyres, for TV viewers there was also a problem following the action, but that could be helped by better on-screen graphics. For people at the track, I'm not sure what could be done, as they want to watch the cars not the circuit TV's.

Bernie (who was watching on TV from home) is quoted as saying "it was pretty crap" and "it needs to be changed". The FIA say it can be changed if we can get "unanimous agreement" and according to news reports team principals will hold a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss how it can be changed quickly. It is unclear what it will be changed to, but Bernie says "I don't just want to go back to the old system", so it looks like it will change but how it will change is unclear.

My understanding is that there are 4 options up for discussion, a) extending the time of Q1 and Q2 and giving the teams extra tyres (this has a cost and I think will not happen as they don't have the tyres), b) leave Q1 and Q2 as they are now and make Q3 the same as the old system (the system wanted by team Sporting Directors), c) extend Q1 and Q2 but make Q3 shorter and have a 5 minute sprint, d) revert to the old system (which seems the best option as it is understood by everyone and the rules are in place).

Option b above is the one that Sporting Directors of the teams wanted when they met with Charlie Whiting at the second Barcelona test, they predicted that Q3 would end with no cars on track. I have a feeling this will be the system they go for if they don't revert to the old system.

Visor tear-off strips must be kept in the car
In a note sent to teams ahead of qualifying in Melbourne, F1 race director Charlie Whiting reminded drivers that regulations by which the sport is governed forbid them from discarding the tear-off strips. He made it clear that Article 1.2 of Chapter 3 of the International Sporting Code is very clear about what is and is not allowed by all drivers of open cockpit cars. It states: "Any tear-offs attached to visors may not be thrown onto the track or the pitlane". Drivers have long fitted a number of tear-off strips to their visors for when their cars are out on track. These can then be removed if their vision becomes obscured by debris or fluid such as water or oil. It has been known for the strips to get trapped in brake ducts, in particular, which have been known to have caused cars to retire.

Yes, that was a problem a lot of the time. But it was fun to watch and simple to follow. It was more fun when the weather forecast was changeable and there'd a lot of different strategies trying to make the best of things.

This year it seems unnecessarily complicated.

Morning.

Just tuned in to see the practice starts.

Just a single paddle clutch release = spin / stall / mess on grid =

He seemed very relaxed talking to Brundle.

Brundle said that they changed the radio rules. They can now talk strategy with the drivers.

Lots of rule "adaptations" on the first race.

Really? I haven't got my headphones on yet, I have sky on the laptop and the race on Brazilian TV, I like to watch on the big screen but with sky commentary.

It was a reaction to problems in practice.

OK, discussing it now on Sky...

There are two Toro Rosso drivers eyeing up his seat

BTW they have decided to revert to the old qualifying system for the next race
