More on Alfa Romeo and Sauber
Sergio Marchionne, the boss of Fiat Chrysler and Ferrari , has said many times that he would like to see Alfa Romeo return to F1 in the not too distant future. When asked in China about the rumours of Alfa Romeo buying Sauber he is reported to have answered "If someone will assume all the debts...", when co-owner of Sauber Monisha Kaltenborn was also asked she replied "Alfa Romeo would be a good partner for any team". It would make sense for them to buy Sauber rather than setting up a new team as Sauber has state of the art facilities in Hinwil Switzerland, built when Sauber were in partnership with BMW.
F1 television viewers fall by one-third
In his comments to an advertising conference (that seem to have sparked lots of news for his old statements) Bernie also said that Official figures from Formula One Management indicate television audiences fell to about 400 million last year, that is down around 200 million viewers since 2008, a staggering one-third of their audiences. It isn't clear how many viewers are watching the sport by other means but the switch to pay to view must account for a large part of the drop, I'd have thought. Despite the drop in numbers F1 is still one of the most watched annual sporting championships across the globe.
He also admitted that he has been "educated" about social media and says he now understands how important it is. Formula One Management claims to have already generated more than one billion social media impressions so far this year. For those of you who use facebook F1 is currently experimenting with something called "Facebook Live" that will allow them to stream live video, so maybe we will be able to buy F1 race by race via the internet or pay to view companies will sell individual races over the 'net without the need to buy a package.
He also said he would like to see 6 races in the USA and would like to expand the calendar to 25 races. He said they are already discussing a street race in Las Vegas and a race at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa once the rebuilding has finished, he also reiterated his view that Formula One does not need to retain races in Europe, although he would like to see the Germany GP remain and a possible return of the French Grand Prix.
