F1 2016

Very tasty by Mr Hamilton.

I think that's 51 poles in his career.

Whatever you say about the bling, parties and - ahem - "music", he's fast.

My Sky sports stream fell on its tits, so I had to find a TV set to watch the qualifying.

(And it's just done it again for the Liverpool v Spurs game. )

According to motorsport.com Hamilton was being investigated for reversing in the pit lane, and that a penalty was possible. Anyone know the out come of the investigation?

just seen the Alonso - Herbert thing
From what was shown on Sky Alonso walked up to Herbert (who looked a little worried) and Herbert asked him "are you retiring?", to which Alonso answered "No, I'm a world champion. You ended up as a commentator because you are not world champion”.

Herbert looked like he wanted to disappear into a hole in the ground:facepalm:

:)

Re Alonsogate: it was a rather ill-advised stuntlet.

His management needs to have the PR people form a tighter, protective ring around him, especially when live TV is shuffling about.

He's a double world champion and ought to be able to rise above personal criticism in the media. If he feels slighted, he should take a nice, calming look at his bank statements and trophy cabinet.

Sneering at someone's lesser achievements makes you look... actually it *is* arrogant. (But that rather reflects Alonso's bigger-than-the-team career.)

It's also a stupid argument. It's akin to saying: what do you know about football? I've never seen you wearing an England shirt. If you know so much about F1, how come you're not running your own team? If you know so much about business, how come you're not rich? If you're the political expert, how come you're not prime minister? World championship victories are not sole and necessary qualifications for commenting on the apparent motivation of a driver.

:p

alonso is an arrogant man with no real sense of humour who has just been stopped racing, I think it's the perfect response towards someone who is clearly trying to get a rise and thinks they are funny. imo

herbert is irritating.

Bernie is right (but this mess is his mistake)
I think Bernie is right when he says teams and drivers should not have any say in the rules of the sport, what do you think?

My reasons for this are simple, the FIA are the sports governing body and should therefore set the rules of the sport, FOM are the commercial rights holders and they have what is called the concorde agreement, the teams sign-up to that agreement if they want to go racing in the FIA Formula one championship, if they don't like the concorde agreement then don't fucking sign it! Why would FIFA or the IOC allow teams or competitors to get involved with making the rules.

While I say I agree with Bernie on this issue, it would be remiss of me not to point out that it was Bernie who set the system up the way it is today, it was he who called for the setting up of the Strategy Group, so he needs to stand up and say loud and clear, I fucked up, it was a mistake, my motivation was this or that and it was the wrong thing to do. Then start again and let us all get back to racing :)

No movement on new qualifying system
It seems that the teams, FIA and FOM are unable to agree on a qualifying system, apparently there are a number of options on the table but as yet they can't agree on which one is best to move forward with. One thing seems to be clear and that is going back to the 2015 system is not an option as both the FIA and FOM have ruled it out.

It is hoped that a decision will be reach at a meeting next Thursday. While non of the options have been made public offically, it seems that the top two options are:
1) qualifying 1 & 2 remain the same with qualifying 3 being similar to last year
2) qualifying remains as is, but the drivers take an aggregate time of two flying laps in qualifying 3

I guess we will have to wait and see if anyone explains more during the race coverage today or until Thursday to see what the cobble together, not really the way to run what is the biggest sporting event on the planet

Good afternoon. I'm trying to watch F1 and Leicester v Southampton both on Sky and premiership rugby on BT Sport.

It's like speedballing TV sport. :D

On qualifying, better they'd just left well alone.

But given that's a dead duck, they should (who? They!) figure out what the top priority - the main purpose - of qualifying is. Is it to sequence the start or to provide extra value and entertainment for attendees / viewers. Flip that coin, then figure out the best for whichever choice.

When you mix up different priorities, you get a mess. That's the problem now.

So Toto confirms Mercedes are getting help with their clutch.

It'll be interesting to see if Ferraris stuff the Mercs at lights-out.

That was interesting, I wonder if there was a little gamesmanship involved there, unusual for a team to public admit a weakness

I guess we will see in 25 minutes :)

If it's public knowledge, there's no advantage in denying it, just bonus points for openness.

Ted K put the question to Toto, so I guess that cat's out of the bag.

Yer, looks like the clutch needs work, that put him in a bad place. Could go in change to mediums and run long
