England v South Africa Test Series

England have grabbed the initiative, but the numbers still, just, favour SA – effectively 71-1 and England have to bat last. But two hours ago, it looked all over. Well done, Graeme Swann. He's a lovely uncomplicated cricketer.

TBF there's some truth to that this time. Getting Smith early could be key. This is just the kind of situation Smith scores heavily in. Plus it's still a very new ball.

i thought this morning's session was going to be the critical one. basically unless one side is miles ahead the next session is always critical - part of the joy of the game.

Do we really need Ian Bell in the side with the likes of Swann and Broad showing up the specialist batsmen on a regular basis?

No, not at all. Bell's all wrong, I'm afraid, just as Mark Ramprakash was. If you take Bell's flying start against Bangladesh out of his figures, he only averages about 35.

He failed at three, so he's been shoved back down to six. But he's never made 100 at five or six unless one of the players above him has also scored 100. AFIK he's never made a 100 at three.

He's a failure, I'm afraid – he hasn't kicked on from a promising youngster – he's played 50 tests already and still feels like the promising youngster, in the team because he looks good and is one for the future.

If he's batting in the junior position of 6 after 50 tests, either he's in a team of amazing world-beaters, or he has a proven record of saving the day after a top-order failure, or there's something wrong.

Smith and the night watchmen both gone. Another wicket within the hour and we might have a game on our hands

And gone cheaply he has.

Good work all round, stifled him and he ended up caught on the rope.

Windies need 51 to win with 1 wicket left on the last day tmrw, these tailenders are making a real go of it. Absolutely thrilling test match.
