England Cricket 2015

Hale's has managed to stay in with 28 to his name. It's good that he'll essentially have to open again tomorrow....albeit with a softer ball. Looks like there will be no doubts regarding selection.

All the batsmen have got a score in the warm-ups. Ali has been economical. Finn has made his case. The team has picked itself and done near perfect prep.

Before they flew out I didn't think they'd stand much of a chance but now it's game on.

Yep, this 11 minus Footitt plus Anderson if Finn's fit.

Always thought England stood a chance, and still do.

If Finn's not fit, I hope they're bold and go with Footitt. Looking at footage of him, he's fast and slingy, and that slinginess makes him a bit prone to Johnsonesque spraying. But he's a proper strike bowler.

Ali wraps up SA A's innings with a 6 fer. Kept it tight in the first innings and then went for blood in the 2nd.

I wonder how this will translate to a proper test.

Well, SA have proved themselves inept against the spinning ball recently. But clearly they will be producing as un-spin-friendly pitches as they can. Reckon Moeen should have his usual quota of top-order batsmen disappointed with their shots, but I wouldn't expect any more.

The real battle is surely going to be between the pace attacks. Steyn is the best, clearly. Morkel's good but not amazing. Philander's injured, but has been ineffective recently anyway.

All down to Steyn for me. And that doesn't necessarily bode well for SA. If Steyn goes crook or is a bit below par, I give England the edge.

Woakes as an opening test bowler? I'm preparing to be astonished.
Bit disappointed they didn't go with Footitt. Woakes has put on a bit of pace apparently. But I'm not inspired by the selection. Let's hope he proves me wrong.

Steven Finn is the tail effectively.

Woakes always seems so hittable. He seems to release the ball early in the action, making him more readable.

Honours even I'd say. would have been England's day but for late wicket. Need to bat to tea tomorrow ideally. SA looking very reliant on Steyn. Let's make him work.

Seeing as 3 times out of 4 we collapse when restarting the innings the next day ... The chances are that we will post close to 200.

Reasons to be cheerful. Cook and root are class so will come again, but will do team good to post a score without them. Watched about an hour this afternoon and only Steyn looked threatening on a definite bowling day.

Course it could fall in a heap tomorrow but more for SA to worry about than England.

Compton still in. Cook will give a reply, as will Root. Hales is just showing he's not a test opener.
Only way I can see Hales working is if he's told to 'do a warner'. See ball hit ball. And if you get out early, well that's why Compton's at 3. No point in him just prodding around.

Not a good session, massive shame Compton could get his century. And not a lot of support from the other end,

Add Bairstow's just gone, fuck. Still 30 off 300.

Well all out for 303, not terrible considering that they were put in but I should imagine SA still fancy their chances.

Broad's innings under the circumstances was near miraculous. Important in terms of psychology, getting to 300 is something to defend at least and our 2 main strike bowlers must be feeling good about now.

Given 3 ducks and only 10 from an opener, the other 7 have made a decent fist of that.

Expect to be behind after SA innings, but they'll be batting last.

Would just prefer to be England right now. Good hard test cricket. Still not convinced by Woakes.

Meanwhile in Melbourne the disintegration of West Indian cricket continues apace. Sad to see and hard to see any positives. A composite team out of them and aus would be the aus team. :(
