England Cricket 2014 (Test, ODI, T20)

I'm sure Pietersen didn't help himself, but bits of this ring true. In particular, the part about bowlers expecting fielders to apologise for dropping catches. Stuart Broad openly had a go at Monty Panesar for a misfield on the field one time, and that was the first time I've ever seen anyone do that. It wasn't right.

Steve Archibald I believe

thought of you/this thread when i read that last night funnily enough.
There was a general consensus on here that Compton was treated badly, dropped prematurely, and must have shat in Gooch's lunch or something. But it appears it may have been other players who forced him out.

I thought similarly about Carberry - dropped prematurely, treated shoddily. Like Compton, not from the top drawer talent-wise. However, brave and a fighter, with good qualities, but somehow paralysed by fear of failure at the end of his short stint.

Anyone hear the compton interview on five (radio) yesterday?

Revenge shall be served.

no, got a link?

heard Aggers talking about the book and agreeing with some of it (the verbals on the field etc) but also wondering about KP generally. apparently there is barely a mention of how he feels about his achievements and its all gripes/moans/conspiracies etc.

i thought the same about Carberry and Compton as well littlebabyjesus

Aggers was also saying that players like Warne, ultimately towed the party line (his example was Warne was told not to socialise with KP during one Ashes series, so he stopped seeing/communicating with him completely). When asked similar, KP either carried on texting his mates or kicked up a fuss.

again, really don't know what to think about a lot of it. six of one it seems but this bullying/clique thing does seem to have traction doesn't it

This isn't just hindsight - I said so at the time. It was a disgrace that Carberry was picked for Sydney with the expectation that it would be his last game, while Root was dropped with the clear expectation that he'd be back for the next test. Ponting is right that this kind of thing is a sign of a weak unit.

And it was similar with Compton. Players being picked for teams, whether England, England A or Worcestershire, in the expectation/hope that they will fail. I think that happened with both Compton and Carberry, and it's an unforgivable thing to ever do.

I can well imagine Broad and Anderson dominating the dressing room in the absence of a powerful captain. They have carried the team through many of the recent disasters. KP just comes across as even more of an egotistical tit.

I enjoy sports, but have never really enjoyed the baboon tribe pecking order of any team I've been a part of. I assumed that was just part of what team sports were about.

Strauss was part of the start of it as well according to pietersen. It might even have been part of his powerful captaincy but got out of hand.

Aggers view of Pietersen's paranoia rings true to me. He made himself an outsider, and is a tit. But that doesn't mean there isn't a heirarchy in the dressing room. Can we really expect there not to be?

Hierarchies can operate in many ways. They don't need to be aggressively policed. Have you a link to j 'scab' aggers views?

His column (not even written by him, which is bizarre given that he's a journalist) sits rather on the fence, and misses the point, I think.

I entirely agree with his comments about the bowlers attacking fielders for making mistakes, and have said so for more than a year. It is counter-productive and entirely unnecessary. No one means to misfield, or drop a catch.

It's not just counter-productive and unnecessary. It's not as if Broad or Anderson were swearing at Cook when he dropped a catch or misfielded. It is a power thing - you have a go at those you perceive to be in a weaker position than you in the team, like Panesar or one of the new boys. As such, it does hint at a deeper problem.

Hang on, he's a freelancer who claims he has to cross picket lines to do his job yet his job is done by someone else? I wonder how much this private school prat costs. And how much the other one costs.

Compton's twitter stuff is non-revealing. few things here and there - but mostly made of support for somerset farmers milk anti-monopoly blockade and a few clearly heartfelt things about a lost love or someone who died.

Despite his wider reputation he is brilliant media-wise. Very funny, informed, clever and to the point. He fronts up the somerset stuff usually (with tregs). Got a job there if he wants it.

Tbf to these fuckwits, broad, swann etc, it becomes a highly pressurised atmosphere from a very young age.

I vaguely recall being called up to represent my county as keeper at under 16 level, in place of a very popular team member. It was fucking awful. Getting snide remarks from my own slips etc. I think it's part of the game. You have to earn respect. I didn't, I have to admit. Stopped playing after that. I assume, at a much higher level, trott et al were suffering the same.
