Croatia vs England - (SF) - 19:00 - 11/07/2018

As a wet ABE these days I refrained from pointing this out up to today because I didn’t want to come across as a whining shit who was trying to pick holes in something really exciting and fun for a lot of people. England ended up on the side of the pool that was, let’s face it, unprecedented in terms of ease of passage to the final and came up short because ultimately they’re not good enough to beat properly decent teams.

I obviously don’t need reminding that Wales didn’t get there at all
Sorry, not true. While England did have an easy run it was hardly unprecedented.

5th easiest passage to the final in the modern format (32 teams).

There have been much easier passages before that, of course.

Not unprecedented, but a massive missed opportunity.

France's route to the final has been the 4th hardest.

Bad as it's been, I didn't imagine ITV's coverage with Ian Wright and Roy Keane shouting at each other, with Wrighty taunting Keane with 'foinal, foinal'... when England are not even in the final.

Last six WCs. Four semi-finalists in each one. So 24 passages in total condisered. 5th easiest out of 24 isn't extraordinarily fortunate.

No. It's every teams' path. 32 x 6.

Admittedly, some of them will be very similar if they're in the same group, but still.

And yep, 4th easiest of the past 6, which proves it's not unprecedented. Still, a great, great opportunity if you want an 'easy' win.

Ah ok. I misread - I thought it said actual results. It isn't. That's pretty much entirely meaningless then. :)

Reason being that this is very much a case for Bayesian statistics - your idea of how good a team is has to be updated after each match.

Funny you stumbling upon that article. It's almost like you're looking for shit to stir with.
Didn't go looking, saw it posted elsewhere
Bit previous and arrogant don't you agree?
How does that make it shitstirring if it's a real thing that happened?
