I'm just going by YouTube clips where a player has defended himself - or another player - from an attack from someone invading the pitch, and they've been sent off. Unless there's been a rule change in the intervening years, the rule still applies.

Agree. If anything, it puts to bed this ridiculous assertion that there was any easy side of the draw. Croatia were taken to penalties by Russia and Denmark yet France got very lucky today. I thought Croatia were the better team. If the French hadn't been given the two controversial decisions in the first half I doubt they'd have get in the game.

But, iirc, the attacker touched it as it passed him, so his movement towards the ball would have been a split second after the ball diverted from the attacker. In other words, there was no way it could have been deliberate.

France were magnificent in the 2nd half. But, as in the usual thought experiment, if they'd gone in 0 - 1 at half time, it's anyone's guess whether they'd have been able to do all that against a defensive Croatia. Personally, I still thought Croatia were robbed.
