Cricket World Cup 2023

Just been reading about this Pathirana kid who's been going for 10 an over. Apparently he has modelled his action on Lasith Malinga. Now Malinga was a great bowler but why on earth would anyone deliberately copy his action?

Malinga was great despite his action, not because of it.
That's not quite true. His low trajectory, delivering the ball from above middle stump was part of what made him so effective.

But Pathirana does appear to be having a bit of a mare again. Problem with a low arm is that there is no margin for error with your ball release. Release early and you spray it down leg. Release late and you spray it wide of off. And that tends to come under high pressure. Malinga's genius was his ability to control direction with that action when under the highest pressure.

Remember Scott Boswell and the over that effectively ended his career?

Disappointing lack of close matches so far in this WC.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan looks to be shaping to be one.

In general though it does feel a bit meh at the moment. Similar to the last one it has the feeling that they'll all play about a hundred matches that hardly anyone watches and then the teams you expect will go through. It doesn't have the sense of jeopardy - it doesn't seem to matter that England got a thrashing off NZ for example.

Falling away badly now. I don't think this is going to be hard for India. Needed 300+ to make a game of it as they're saying the wicket is pretty good.

How good is Jasprit Bumrah?

That wicket's gonna take turn. And the Afghans have some fairly decent spin. Not over yet.

Not content with crashing out of the rugby world cup in humiliating fashion it looks like the same might be happening in the cricket for the dear old Aussies

That was definitely not out. Bonkers. Whoever the third umpire is doesnt know the fucking rules.

This has happened a few times. They look at a regular review with good rigour and process but as soon as they get something out of the ordinary they seem to panic and fuck it up.

I can understand Billy Bowden getting the same decision wrong in 2005 as he had no access to the video ref. But this video ref, what the fuck was he looking at? I'd be furious.

I can't see how it happened. It was clear that his hand was off the bat and some distance from his other hand. The obvious conclusion has to be that the 3rd umpire doesn't know the law.

Who was it?

Richard Kettleborough?

He seemed to say that his two gloves were touching each other. Which would constitute both touching the handle. They weren't touching from what I could see.

Weird drs fuck up. Joel Wilson was right that time!

But Aus weirdly all over the place. Two thrashings already. Surely one more performance like that and they're out.

Bit of a walkover again :( NZ will no doubt make the final with their gang of journeymen and gallantly lose to someone or other. Must be the unluckiest side in the world.
