Cricket World Cup 2023

Meanwhile, England need to win two of their last three games to stand a decent chance of playing in the Champions Trophy. They have a lot to play for!

England are 1000/1 on Betfred, for the tournament.

I couldn't resist burning a fiver on it!
Even if England win their last three games, they need one of NZ and Aus to lose all their remaining games. And they need to win their games by huge margins and to hope that NZ/Aus lose by huge margins.

They also need other, more likely things, like Afghanistan not winning all their remaining games. ETA: Sorry not quite right. They need Afghanistan to lose two of their remaining three games.

And that's just to get to the semis to play, in all probability, India!

That's shite odds. :D

tbf NZ are doing their best for England here. :D

Their NRR is still going to be at least 0.4. Pakistan need to beat them quite heavily in the next game to go above them as they enter the final round. NZ not qualifying is now a distinct possibility, though.

I wouldn't count out Afghanistan either. Beat the Netherlands next up and they're right in the mix.

Looking at realistic goals, I think England want Afghanistan to beat the Dutch. Realistically, England should be aiming for two wins out of three to see them sneak above Bangladesh and the Netherlands.

While I like this idea. It's going to be India or the Saffas. I wish they'd fucking hurry up and get to the business end.
I think it's anyone's once we reach the semis. It's the nature of ODIs (and t20) that any team can beat any team on any given day. Just takes one or two outstanding individual performances.

Pakistan sneaking into fourth place then beating India in the semis? Could happen. They could easily reduce India to 30-4 or something.

Lots of things could still happen. England qualifying for the semis isn't one of them. ;)

Important runs these for NZ. Interesting that they've sent Henry out. He's pretty much bound to damage that hamstring more. Suggests to me that they think he's out of the tournament regardless.

Another damp squib then. It's nobody's fault I guess. This should have been an equal battle. Is it the toss? But gah... what a shit tournament. Even the players must be a bit bored by now.

I'm still painting doorframes. :( Bloody top hall has eight doors. Bathroom, two bedrooms and computer room and four cupboards.

We just need Tests and T20. Everybody looks fucking bored by this. This was a Kerry Packer thing from 40 odd years ago, things have moved on. I'd love to see the annual report of the ICC as to how much money this actually makes.

ODIs predate Packer. As with many things, limited overs cricket was first innovated in England's county system to generate revenue for the professional circuit. See also T20.

I still think it is too early to judge the tournament as a whole. Attendances have picked up and there may still be the odd twist. And the semis and final could save it. If the final is a classic, a lot will be forgotten.

One big plus for 50-overs over t20 is the prominence it gives to bowlers. The two top teams on the table are the two teams with the best fast bowling units. For all the big hitting, it is the likes of Bumrah, Shami, Rabada and Jansen who have had the biggest impact. Bumrah in particular is India's most important player. Any given team's most important player is normally their best bowler. That's true in tests and also usually in 50-over cricket.
