Cricket World Cup 2023

Well, I've just watched Hearts hold onto a 1 - 0 lead against Rangers for 76 minutes... then lose 2 -1. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I'd drop Stokes, Root and Buttler right now. They've played terribly. Stokes is in the side for his batting but can't seem to even see the ball these days. Just swipes away. He missed 5 in a row from Shami.

Dunno where they go from here. And they've still got three more games to endure. Woakes looks a better batsman than anyone in the top order so put him in to first drop.

Let's start with the most obvious, erm, error there. Woakes has played 5 innings for 44 runs with a top score of 14. So I don't know what you mean at all there.

But yes, Stokes is a joke and Buttler is waaaaaay out of form and his captaincy has been rubbish. Wouldn't have made any difference (because we can't bat) but Woakes, the bowler, the best bowler today, only got 9 overs.

Wood has been a major disappointment.

And back to the batting. In the averages, two of England's top three are bowlers. The 4th (and 4th highest run scorer, Brook) is the batsman who's been dropped.

They've been all over the place on the pitch and off it.

I wouldn’t be surprised Moeen and Adil have fallen out with certain players over Gaza. I doubt Mott is the most enlightened person around.

Plus contract stuff, would not have helped,

I never thought I'd say this but I'm starting to get cricket fatigue.

I think it's a combination of the appalling lack of decent matches, England's woeful performance, and the dull atmosphere at the stadiums in games that India aren't in. I find empty stadiums a real downer.

Switching the game on in the morning has just become routine and I'm not particularly looking forward to any of the games, but I know the one I decide to skip will be the game of the century!

Think I might go highlights only now until the semis.

I just stick it on as background noise. The commentators are clearly suffering from fatigue too. They're barely even talking about the actual game.

Bonkers stat from their waffling though. Nabi has played in 153 of the 158 games Afghanistan has ever played and beaten 43 different countries in the process :D

Think I'll switch my support to Afghanistan.

Excellent game of cricket, though SL haven't done themselves any favours with the short stuff in the closing overs.

Another one-sided game. Bangladesh have been as awful as England in this tourno, with terrible batting giving their bowlers little chance. Not sure whether to stick or twist, doing neither and getting out softly. Mahmudullah's almost been playing a lone hand.

Glenn Maxwell has fallen out of a golf cart and will be out for a week :D

Meanwhile de Kock has just hit his 4th century of the tournament. Ludicrous.

SA crushing NZ, so we now know two of the semi-finalists: India and South Africa. For them not to qualify, it would take an improbable set of results involving, among other things, Afghanistan thrashing their last three opponents.

NZ and Aus still have work to do. Hate to say it for today's spectacle, but NZ need to forget about winning now. Consolidate and see if they can get more than 250.

NZ have had the easiest of fixtures overall so far. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Netherlands, all played. England can hardly be said to have tested them (and, as I've said, I don't believe they have a chance in this WC).

I think we need to wait before awarding NZ a place in the final based on those games.

* Cough *

They can afford to lose this and to Pakistan as long as they don't get thrashed. But they have to beat Sri Lanka.
