Why do you want to shut down McDonalds?

Perhaps..in the article it says "The company will be hoping that by taking the Israeli business back "in house" it can restore its reputation in the Middle East and meet its key sales targets once more."... i doubt thats going to make any difference unless they start whipping their staff or something
It shows that boycotts can have an impact though.

McDonald's will buy back all of its Israeli restaurants after sales suffered from a boycott of the brand over its perceived support for Israel.
The fast food giant was criticised after its Israeli franchise gave away thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers.
McDonald's said it had reached a deal with franchisee Alonyal to return 225 outlets.
It said in January the Israel-Hamas war had "meaningfully impacted" business.
Widespread protests affected sales in the Middle East, Indonesia and France.

Or start selling Brewdog

I wonder if there's anything else this food company that made $14 billion in profits last year and has a massive distribution network could do to improve its reputation in the Middle East
airdropping potato flour on the heads of starving Gazans seems to be the model the samaritan West considers acceptable...maybe they could lob some chips over the wall

what i dont get is how buying the restaurants makes any difference to anyone
Yeah surely taking it all in house would mean they have to take full responsibility and can't blame the local franchise?

I suppose it would give them the option of shutting the israel operation down without getting sued by the franchise owner? (If they decided they needed to do that).

No idea what they are actually planning or thinking though.

French fries is American for chips, but you know that, you pompous buffoon

I believe that the closest American equivalent to UK-style chips are what they call "steak cut" fries.

Baffling for anyone to get all nationalist about the particular kind of deep-fried potato product they prefer. Especially from those who would otherwise be scandalised at being compared to "Little Englander" types.

they're all chips though innit. they're nice thick and they're nice thin. Though kind of boring.

Personally I could go for either depending on my mood. In either case, their relative blandness is forgivable on account of them being a side dish, rather than the main event.

I think it will make a difference, but it won't be the one that McDonalds expects. By buying the franchises, they're taking full responsibility for anything that happens from here on. When it's their franchisees who are supporting Israel, they can lay blame at their feet since they aren't asserting direct control. McDonalds will regret buying these back somewhere down the line and probably in the near future.

Wrong. Mac's fries are not pure potato. I see they even have beef flavouring in them.
Beef flavouring is a 'natural' alternative to the msg a lot of chip shops add to their salt. No chip is pure potato, they're all cooked in some sort of oil and mostly seasoned as well.

Chippy chips aren't "pure potato" either. They're often fried in the same oil as many other things. Plus the frying process itself will create new compounds such acrylamide, polymers, and free radicals. Sounds scary I know, but these are perfectly ordinary products of the cooking process.
