Vegetarians! Why aren't you vegan?

I guess that if it isn't actively looked after, grazing land will become grassland of some kind; and other less domesticated grazing animals will use it anyway.

Or it'll get built on.

It'll get taken over by dock and bracken and the like. I agree that there should be a drastic cut in meat consumption as it's all out of balance but I don't think the people who advocate wholesale cessation of meat eating understand that it's not really so simple

Ecosystem management ain't simple at all eh?

But dock and bracken etc would vie with grasses, and other wildlife would start to flourish in any event.

When I get involved in this sort of discussion I always start thinking about the roaming wild welsh sheep that were so prevalent on the mountains/tips in South Wales when I was a kid. I've no idea if they're so numerous now.

everyone would have to go vegan, but only after having a massive pig out on the dairy cows and other animals we're getting rid of

Yeah, it's that simple.

Would the dairy industry be allowed to cary on or would we all have to go vegan?

Nah, it'll come down to profit. GM mutated crops that would grow on grazing land. Or building on it. Or summat. Not turning it over to the wild.

And if it was turned over to the wild, folks'd trap and kill the wildlife/game rather than trying to eat dock and bracken.

What wildlife/game?

What wildlife/game?

If land's left fallow for a significant amount of time, other types of wildlife start to flourish. With ex grazing land (depending on location/geography etc) I was thinking deer, sheep, goats, rabbits etc etc.

None of which can live off dock and bracken afaik. I may be wrong of course but I don't think we can assume the effects on the ecosystem would all be beneficial

It depends on the location/geography. There're big tracts of uncultivated mountainous land already that aren't overtaken by just dock and bracken. *welsh sheeps*

Edit: soz, you added more in that 30 secs, I wasn't selectively quoting you

What would happen to the species we currently raise for food if no-one ate meat?

Species rather than breed?
I would think that the species would carry on one way or another (if given a habitat obviously)
I guess the of breeds we know today, many would die off, some would interbreed, mongrel breeds would appear, some would die off, others would adapt... I guess. It's not gonna happen anyway.

My original point was in response to a statement saying 'it's ethical to eat meat' on a thread aimed at vegetarians :)

So you're advocating still eating meat but catching it yourself?

It is more ethical to eat meat than to drink milk :)
